Limited to 1000 copies. Map endpapers. The book is filled with hundreds of vintage portraits and other photographs. This copy belonged to Mrs. Nola J. Osburn who according to her hand-written note on the book's front endpaper helped collect the book's genealogical records on the Dunklin County Missouri "Austins" relatives of her father. In this copy Mrs. Osburn has hand-written copious ink annotations of geneological and historical interest on the verso of numerous maps and other plates and in the margins of dozens of pages. Bound in the original gilt-stamped maroon cloth. Complete with dust jacket. Signed by co-author Nola J. Osburn. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. A commonplace comprised of manuscript notes and associated ephemera in a single legible hand exploring the genealogy of James Robertson Thomson b. 1847 whose lineage may be traced back to William Kerr Earl of Lothian c.1605-1675 Scottish soldier and politician heavily involved in the constitutional wranglings between Scotland and the English Parliament in the late 1640s via the noble families of Rutherfoord Robertson and Cuthbertson. Of note is the loose insertion of a two-page letter dated 22nd July 1746 in the hand of one John Rutherfoord of Knowsouth memorialising his own family history a later manuscript note to the verso records the date of his death as 29th July 1788. . This is the rare original 1908 first printing -- NOT print on demand edition or reprint. A solid reading/reference copy. Square and tight. Bound in beige cloth with handsomely decorated gilt-stamped brown leather spine and corners. The leather is sound and in Very Good condition only lightly rubbed. However the cloth is stained and moderately soiled. Marbled endpapers. Photos available upon request. 7" wide by 10.25" tall. Pages are not stained. They are clean and unmarked but slightly wavy. 1908. First Edition. Vol. 3 only i.e. Index to All Parts of THE GENEALOGY OF THE BRAINERD-BRAINARD FAMILY IN AMERICA 1649-1908. This copy bears the signature and ink stamps of Lt. Col. D. L. Brainard D.C.G. U.S. Army. of San Francisco CA. It is also hand-dated "Sept. 1st 1908" on the same page as his signature. During his 40 year military career David Legg Brainard 1856-1946 was a veteran of the Indian Wars and member for three years of the Greely Arctic Expedition. As First Sergeant chief of enlisted men he was in charge of all outdoor or field work and was therefore in command of many important boat and sledge operations. Stranded by poor weather conditions for more than two years in the Arctic with only a handful surviving his party was rescued by Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley on June 22 1884. Brainard was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel by President Theodore Roosevelt and later become a Brigadier General. When he died in March 1946 he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
