2003609373Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co. New with No dust jacket as issued. 2003. Hardcover. Red hardbound book with title and author in gold on front cover and spine. No dust jacket as issued . 504 pages. This new work contains a list of 7000 marriages and boasts an additional 16000 index entries. It contains all marriage references--including licenses bonds mentions in wills deeds order books and Bible records--that the author could locate in both published and unpublished sources and because it is so well sourced it offers far more than a simple list of marriages. Starting with marriage license bonds for Northumberland County 1783-1800 Westmoreland County 1772-1800 Richmond County 1750-1800 and Lancaster County 1701-1800 the author added marriages from scattered licenses fee books ministers' returns family bibles and notes in various volumes of court records finalizing his research in the will books and deed books for Northumberland Lancaster Westmoreland Old Rappahannock and Richmond counties as well as in standard publications. The result is a work with many unusual features. Besides the names of husband and wife and the date of marriage entries may contain the names of parents grandparents former spouses children of previous marriages and other relations as well as names of persons connected with the marriage such as securities for the groom guardians and clergymen. In addition parent and children relationships are spelled out as are sibling relationships and there is a wealth of incidental detail concerning illigitimate children places of birth and residence putative marriages dates of death of one or more parents exact spellings of names and precise dates of marriage. . 1750ABC_46340The Netherlands 1750. Oblong 8vo ca. 10.5 x 16 cm. 18th-century gold-tooled calf gold-tooled spine each board with a double-fillet frame a centrepiece and four cornerpieces gilt edges green cloth ties. Manuscript on paper written in brown and black ink in several - 17th- 18th- and 19th-century hands. With a full-page unidentified coat-of-arms showing three salamanders drawn in brown ink and a page containing 6 smaller crests of branches of the Roorda family in black ink. 1 blank 5 3 blank 20 1 blank 1 78 blank ll. Manuscript family chronicle incorporating multiple chronicles from the 17th and 18th century. The manuscript chronicles the births and deaths of four generations of the Bos Werdolen or Verdole and Roda family in Amersfoort Groningen The Hague Scheveningen IJsselstijn Tiel Deventer Kampen Zuilen and Edam. The book was probably compiled by Dirk Daniel Roda 1726-1898 a lieutenant in the infantry and later beer brewer shortly after the death of his father in 1747. It incorporates chronicles by his father Michiel Roda 1686-1747 his maternal grandfather Jacob Werdolen chronicling 1668-1686 Jacob Werdolen's father Hendrik van Werdolen a note from 1639 and a copy by Hendrik's wife Barbera Bos born 1596 of the chronicle written by her father chronicling 1577-1601.The different chronicles are interleaved with notes by Dirk Daniel Roda which supply additional biographical information. In several pages he describes the his own Roorda ancestors in the 17th century and the process by which they changed their name to Roda. Other notes chronicle the origins of the Roorda family crest of which he has drawn the known six versions. A full-page coat-of-arms containing three salamanders was possibly drawn by Barbera Bos. Although this specific crest could not be identified it probably refers to a branch other than "Bos" meaning forest or wood in her family. With the bookplate of Eltjo Aldegondus van Beresteyn 1876-1948 on the front paste-down. Also with his library label on the front board. Van Beresteyn was very interested in genealogy explaining his possession of the present family chronicle and founded the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie CBG. A pencil inscription on the second to last leaf notes that the book was bought from H. Coffrie in 1938.Binding somewhat worn and rubbed leather on the spine somewhat cracked and with a few minor gaps paste-downs slightly browned some occasional spotting browning and soiling but overall in good condition. A fascinating family chronicle with a very interesting provenance.l For Van Beresteyn: J.A.A. Bervoets 'Beresteijn jhr. Manuscript in Dutch written in one hand in a neat 17th-century hand cursive hand. With 65 coat of arms almost all of them coloured by hand. Also with some spaces for coats of arms left blank. A loose leaf added to volume with 34 ink-drawn and contemporary hand-coloured small coats of arms with accompanying text written in a cursive 17th-century hand. 2 volumes. 4 plus 1 loose leaf; 8 ll. Very interesting manuscript genealogies of two highly important Dutch noble families originating from the city of Culemborg and the village Beusichem south-east of Utrecht together with their allied Dutch Flemish and Hainaut families running from ca. 925 till ca. 1650 latest entry in the manuscript dated 1654. Both volumes are written in the same hand probably in the third quarter of the seventeenth century and elaborately illustrated with different hand-coloured coat of arms. The first volume contains coat of arms from among others important Dutch families as Uytten Enge Raephorst Bronckhorst Vyanen-Rijsenburg Borre van Amerongen Taets van Amerongen and Reness; the second volume also contains coat of arms from important Dutch but also Flemish and Hainaut families such as Arckel Vyanen-Montfoort Weerdenburg Egmont Reiffenscheyt Lalaing Pallant-Cocq van Nerynen Poelgeest Nievelt Merode Mathenesse etc. In this first volume a leaf with a genealogy is inserted. This leaf was written by the Utrecht historian and genealogist Arnoldus Buchelius 1565-1641 who composed many leaves with family trees and coloured coats of arms for wealthy Dutch noble families. The present leaf concerns the Cuylemburch and Rysenburch family. Altogether beautifully written in a neat 17th-century hand the manuscript is not only visually appealing but it also provides a rich history of some of the most important families from the Low Countries from the 10th till the 17th century. With the bookplate of Edwin Jaquet Sellers 1865-1945 on the front paste-downs with his engraved coat of arms.
