Family Record: Four Pages of Genealogy Relating to Joseph Angell Young

66896Ephemera. Four pages of genealogy on two loose leaves 6 1/2 x 10 1/4" which appear to have come from a family Bible. The pages are divided into columns with the following headings: Births; Deaths; Marriages. One page lists the births of Joseph A. Young's parents Brigham Young and Mary Ann Angell. On the reverse the marriages of Joseph A. Young and his family members are listed. The second page lists the children of Joseph A. Young and Mary Ann Ayres in the "Births" column. The days of the week along with "G S L City" are listed next to their names and the dates of their births often with the exact time listed as well. On the verso of this page the "Deaths" of their children are listed Mary Thornton Young Elsie Vilate Josephine Young Alice Young and others. Joseph Angell Young 1834-1875 was Brigham Young's eldest son. He was born October 14 1834 in Kirtland Ohio. He came to Utah in an early day and actively participated in the affairs of the new settlement as a frontiersman. He also played an important role in emigration affairs and he is known for enduring bitter storms and biting frosts during one of the harshest winters in order to successfully rescue the belated hand-cart companies of that season. In addition he built and was the first superintendent of the Ogden-Salt Lake line the old Utah Central and was among the promoters of the Utah Southern. In 1872 Young was appointed to preside over the Sevier district of the Church spanning from Gunnison to Kanab. Two years later the settlements on the Sevier were organized as the Sevier Stake of Zion and Elder Young was appointed to preside over this Stake. He held this position until his death taking a significantly active part that tended to build up and strengthen the new settlements as well as introducing the United Order to the Saints on the Sevier. In Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume I Andrew Jenson cites a passage published by Deseret News following Young's death: "Elder Young was esteemed for his many estimable qualities of heart as well as head. He was a man of naturally keen intelligence his mental qualities even reaching what might be termed brilliancy in some directions while his generosity was proverbial especially among the working classes all who were ever in his employ holding him in esteem for his universally kind and fair treatment." Andrew Jenson also points out that "On account of the persecutions of the 'Mormon' people he Joseph A. Young was deprived of the advantage of an early education but was a discriminating and passionate reader and at the time of his death had perhaps the finest private library in the Territory." Two leaves from a Family Record which contain the genealogy of an important family descending from Brigham Young and significant to the history of Utah and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. - Information obtained from "Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume I" by Andrew Jenson. unknown

Placed inside volume 1 is a printed copied letter with blank envelope signed by the author June 1885 and small note on paper "Please acknowledge the receipt E. S. Salisbury." This letter describes the set discusses how many copies are for sale and how much each will cost. A folded 8 page extra half title page title page dedication page and preface page folded laid inside the front cover. There is no writing in part 1. Previous owner inscription written on the right front flyleaf part 2 - "Robert Bogardus Snowden See Breese" Breese is underlined. A few brief pencil notes located in the Breese section. One sheet of additional family information is laid inside the text. A small "Supplement to Preface" paginated viii. The supplement is laid inside the front cover. The supplement is numbered 106 of 200 copies. Heavy edge toning and some chips to this supplement. 77937Small archive of genealogical material associated with Archibald Leard Taylor 1853-1946 largely compiled by his wife Fannie Elizabeth Taylor nÃ©e Hawley 1855-1936. An announcement in the Oakland Tribune on June 29 1917 concerning the marriage of their daughter Elva notes â€œUntil a few years ago the Taylors made their home in the East Oakland district where they were numbered with the earlier pioneers.â€ Born in Salzburg Pennsylvania Archibald Leard Taylor travelled to California around 1878 with his brother Dr. William Stewart Taylor 1847-1931. According to a manuscript biography in Fannie Taylorâ€™s hand he was employed as a salesman â€œin the country districtsâ€ while also studying theology with an interest in pursuing missionary work in China. This passage is followed by a lively account of his pursuit of permanent work in San Francisco which resulted in a position with W.J. Garrettâ€™s Machine Works Brass and Bell Foundry at the corner of Fremont and Natoma streets. While he remained active in the Presbyterian Church the field of engineering provided him with steady employment including as the secretary and treasurer of a crane foundry and as an agent for a high temperature supplies company. Alexander and Fannie were married in San Francisco on May 4 1882. Their union resulted in six children including a daughter who died at age two. The couple resided in Oakland Ward 7 until around 1920 when they moved to Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County to pursue stock farming with Alexanderâ€™s sister Mary Margaret Taylor 1852-1925. No account of the success of this endeavor could be found and by 1930 Alexander and Fannie had established a retirement home in San Leandro California. Compiled by Fannie with the assistance of relatives genealogical societies and other sources this collection of material includes documentation that establishes a connection with Zachary Taylor the 12th president of the United States. Notably it also includes a family hair album with 37 locks of hair from various individuals in the Taylor and Hawley families. All the locks are stitched in place and labeled with the contributorâ€™s name. A few are described as being collected on the day of or after the individualâ€™s death. This archive includes: "Taylor Ancestry of Archibald Leard Taylor. Giving Family Records to John and Elizabeth Rhea Taylor Genealogy from Zachary I to James Taylor I and Traditions of English Ancestry together with Origin and Tracings down to the 17th Century.
