Discrète étiquette d'une librairie de São Paulo en page de titre. "Mossieu Réac est, sans doute, un opportuniste politique et un charlatan. Au cours de sa vie, il exerce de nombreux métiers et exprime diverses opinions politiques : il est d’abord financier, puis journaliste, et puis homme politique. Son cœur est légitimiste, mais il se fait passer pour un républicain, pour un socialiste, ou pour un orléaniste. Dès sa première enfance, il est arrogant et égoïste : il passe trop de temps « dans le ventre de sa mère » et il « mord sa nourrice ». Même pendant son enfance, il est opportuniste, avare, et il vit sans principes moraux : « jaloux d’obtenir quelque palme et trop cancre pour la devoir à son mérite, il achète la composition d’un camarade ».
