We may well be 'a nation of shopkeepers', but for generations England was a country dominated by its middling families, rooted on their land, in their locality, with a healthy interest in turning a profit from their property and a deep distrust of the centralised state. The virtues we may all believe to be part of the English culture, honesty, affability, courtesy, liberality, each of these has their source in gentry life cultivated over five hundred years. These folk were the backbone of England. This book concentrates on fourteen families with a time span from 1400 to the present day. From the medieval gung ho of the Plumpton family to the high seas adventures of the Lascelles in the 18th century, to more modern examples, the book provides a chronological picture of the English, seen through these intimate, passionate, powerful stories of family saga. The families have been selected from all over the country and range from the famous to the unknown. Some families are divided by politics , such as the family that took different sides in the Reformation; others destroy their inheritance through reckless gambling or investments . All of them are vivid depictions of the life and code of the gentry, and have left deep archives of family papers which the author has been able to use, often for the very first time. 460p. notes index Book

Modernity is clearly visible in Bursa during the last century. What is observed in Bursa is a transformation starting the 20th century with a new vision and point of view. Whole of moulds shaped within the frame of this transformation will multiply in variety reflecting on the traditional; and, the urban bourgeoisie and intelligentsia will form step by step.

They trooped in the Canadian backwoods and across the western prairies, bringing culture and colour to many pioneer communities." - from dust jacket. 229 pages including bibliography and index. "Any friend of heraldry will eventually run into difficulties when trying to become acquainted with the customary heraldic practice of foreign countries. There is the problem of discovering which books to study and where to find them, and there is the frustrating experience of seeing one's efforts handicapped by language barriers. I have been collecting information about international heraldry for many years, with emphasis on its pictorial peculiarities and the peculiarities of customs, rules and styles, excepting those regions in the Balkans which underwent different trends of development during their occupation by the Turks... This book is the result. It is far from being encyclopaedic but should be of value to anyone wishing to gain a more international view of the subject. It should also serve as an introduction to heraldry for a newcomer to the field. Chapters include: Introduction; The Sheild; Charges; The Helm, Crest and Mantling; Blazon; Supporters; Augmentations; Differencing and Cadency; Marshalling of Arms; Burgher-Arms; Gentry, Untitled Continental Mobility, Knights and Baronets; Titled Nobility; Princes, Kings, Dukes and Emperors; Corporate Arms; Religious Orders of Chivalry; Heraldry in the Roman Catholic Church; Heraldry in the Church of England; Badges. Glossy colour illustrations throughout. Clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Excellent copy. Book

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed (ALS) 'Eyubzâde Lâmi' Ömer' addressed to his aunt. 26,5x20 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Full. Folded. It starts with 'My dear aunt'. He describes his travel during sixteen days from Trebizond to Anvers, Belgium by a ship and his memoirs in the capital of Antwerp province in the Flemish Region of Belgium. 'Eyubzade'family of Trebizond, especially settled in Maçka region, is a well-established and very important family that raised prominent individuals in the 18th and 19th centuries and played important roles in the social and economic life of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. The family served in 'Maçka voivodalik' from 1764 to 1837. In the period after the declaration of the Tanzimat, the role of family members who held administrative positions in the Trabzon bureaucracy is very important as well in regard to the central administration-local bureaucracy-gentry triangle. Eyübzade Mehmed Hamdi Efendi was the writer of 'Safahat-i Hayatim' book who was also the grandfather of Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu, (1911-1975), who was a famous Turkish poet and painter.
Sm. folio, First and Sole Edition, with copper-engraved illustrated title and 62 fine copper-engraved plates showing 372 coats of arms, some mild age-staining (mainly marginal) and a few leaves with inoffensive worming in lower blank margin; publisher's boards, cloth back, very neatly recased, new paper label, a very good, relatively clean copy. This copy is complete with all plates; it has been bound without the introduction and list of subscribers that are sometimes present. This very scarce work is generally attributed (including Halkett & Laing) to Sir George Nayler, Garter King-at-Arms, but DNB states 'it was in reality the work of one Ames, an engraver at Bristol', an opinion shared by Moule. Anderson adds that the arms are taken 'chiefly from Atkyns's and Rudder's histories'.The title-vignette shows Time as an angel supporting the ancient arms of the City of Gloucester with the cathedral in the distance.Anderson p.106; Austin 12084; Moule DCXCII (p.469); Upcott Gloucestershire VIII (p.264).
