The Birmingham Riots of 1791 also known as the Priestley Riots were a violent uprising that took place between July 14 and July 17 1791 targeting religious dissenters'most notably the scientist and theologian Joseph Priestley. The riots were fueled by tensions over support for the French Revolution as Priestley and other dissenters were outspoken in their advocacy for political reform.The violence began when a banquet in support of the French Revolution was held at the Royal Hotel in Birmingham sparking outrage among conservative factions. The rioters attacked Dissenting chapels homes and businesses including Priestley's own residence Fairhill which was burned down along with his scientific equipment and papers. Many rioters became intoxicated while looting and some even perished in fires they had started.The London Corresponding Society founded in 1792 was a radical political organization that sought universal suffrage and parliamentary reform. It was closely linked to the ideals of the French National Convention which had abolished the monarchy and established a republic in France. The British government viewed the society as a threat leading to crackdowns on political dissent and the eventual suppression of radical movements. 21 pages of contemporary reports of the Priestley Riot the trials of rioters and aftermath. Bishop Potter writes to a Mr. Lloyd regarding dividends on 2 insurance policies. Signed "H. C. Potter". Folded vertically down the center else fine. <p>The address 96th Fourth Avenue was the location of Grace Church School and the Church houses.<p>Henry C. Potter 1835-1908 was the seventh Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. In 1892 during his administration the cornerstone of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was laid. Potter was notable for his interest in social reform and politics. While he was rector of Grace Church New York 1868-1884 he worked to inaugurate working men's clubs day nurseries and kindergartens and long after he became bishop he continued to take part in the summer work of missions on the east side of New York City. In 1900 he attacked the Tammany Hall administration accusing the city of protecting vice and helped lead a reform movement which elected a new mayor. 96 Fourth Avenue, New York City, June 11, 1884. unknown

Good. - A few words penned in black ink on part of a sheet of letterhead 5-1/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide with the embossed Privy Council seal printed in blind at the top. The paper is mounted on a piece of card of the same size. Signed "John Simon". The letterhead is slightly discolored from the mounting with 2 tiny brown marks near the top edge. The note was folded twice for mailing. There are glue marks remnants of paper & 2 ink notations on the verso of the mount. Good. <p>Simon writes that the change proposed by his correspondent is quite acceptable to him.<p>Sir John Simon 1816-1904 was an English pathologist surgeon and public health reformer. He held surgical posts at King's College Hospital and St. Thomas's Hospital in London from 1840 until 1876. Public health was not considered a responsibility of the government in the early 19th century. Parliament passed the Public Health Act of 1848 partly in response to Simon's influence and to deal with the threat of cholera and other public health problems. Simon was appointed the first Medical Officer of Health for the City of London. He was later made the head of the Medical Department of the Government and remained in that post until his retirement in 1876. Though he had no previous public health experience Simon's ongoing interest in pathology gave him a distinct advantage as a medical officer. He called for municipal action to provide adequate sanitary disposal and drainage improved standards of housing and upgrading of the water supply. His advocacy resulted in the Sanitary Act of 1875 which for the first time made a public health law universal and compulsory. Simon was also a member of Privy Council 1858-1876 and President of the Royal Society 1879-1880. May 21st, circa [1860s]. unknown

The Commission on Immigration Reform CIR was formed by Congress in 1990 to critically examine United States immigration policies. The bipartisan commission was chaired by the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan the highly esteemed civil rights advocate and is often referred to as the Jordan Commission. In a series of reports submitted between 1994 and 1997 the commission analyzed the impact of current immigration policies and issued recommendations for reform. The spirit of these recommendations was to return U.S. immigration policy to its stated intentions: reuniting nuclear families providing employers with skilled workers and providing humanitarian aid to refugees. The commission's primary recommendations were to improve controls against illegal immigration revamp the refugee and asylum admission system and reduce legal immigration. As mandated by the Immigration Act of 1990 the Commission conducted more than 40 public hearings consultations and site visits in the United States and some foreign countries. This final report makes recommendations to further the goals of Americanization by setting out immigrant policies to help orient immigrants and their new communities to improve educational programs that help immigrants and their children learn English and civics and to reinforce the integrity of the naturalization process by which immigrants become citizens. The report also makes recommendations for immigration policy repeating and updating the conclusions reached in three previous reports on unlawful migration legal immigration refugee and asylum policy and making additional recommendations for reforming immigration policies. The Commission urges a renewed commitment to the education of immigrant children and a recognition that education is the primary tool of Americanization for children and adults. paperback

They posed addiction problems. They could be sold on the black market. Doctors could intentionally or otherwise over-prescribe them. It was possible for patients to go to mutliple doctors and get multiple prescriptions enabling them to abuse the drugs. While these risks exist the committee also recognized that these drugs exist because they had legitmate medical uses and provided pain and other relief to patients for which there might be no alternative sources.
