1904MA0038Printed by The National Press Agency Ltd. and published by The National Reform Union as #234 of the 'National Reform Union Leaflet' series Manchester 1904. 1904. Book. Good. No Binding. 1st Edition. First edition. A single sheet measuring 27cm x 22cm. Folded once with some tenderness to the fold and the paperstock a little toned marked spotted and brittle. Some further soiling to the unprinted reverse. Above the title is a black and white cartoon of two ghostly British officers from the Boer War "Ghosts of the British Dead" alongside the skeleton of a third. One figure points at a line of Chinese labourers and is allocated the quotation "Look there Bill that's what you and I and twenty thousand others died for" this in reference to a labour shortage at the gold mines on the Rand a result of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 displacing large numbers of the indigenous population which resulted in the importation of Chinese labour in 1904. The cartoon was originally printed in a January 1904 issue of the British newspaper 'Morning Leader' and is reproduced here as #234 of the National Reform Union Leaflets. A good copy of a most uncommon survivor. Printed by The National Press Agency Ltd., and published by The National Reform Union as #234 of the 'National Reform Union unknown

183933043Boston: New England Female Moral Reform Society 1839. Very Good. Boston: New England Female Moral Reform Society 1839. First Edition. Octavo; self-wrappers unopened. 16pp. Toning and creasing to edges with a few minor nicks; about Very Good. <br /> <br /> The New England Female Moral Reform Society's stated goal was the "prevention of licentiousness" prostitution the moral double standard regarding both and protecting young women from the "unprincipled destroyer who seduce and ruin the unsuspecting." Indeed this issue devotes a section to "Street Beggars" who are imposters attempting to lead astray the young and unsuspecting. The paper continues in telling the story of two young women who were led to "a house of ill fame" by one such imposter and were saved from a member of the society and thus saved "from this sink of iniquity. from her 'whose house is the way to hell going down to the chambers of death.'"<br /> <br /> Also of note here is the ongoing "Letters to Sarah E. Grimke" portion of this publication which runs several pages in this issue gently arguing several points regarding the role of women in society. The letter concludes with a post script that the author has just received Grimke's pamphlet "Equality of the Sexes" acknowledges her sincere obligations and urges everyone who reads this publication to also read Grimke's.
