A la recherche d'une troisième voie entre réformistes et communistes, position qu’il défendra jusqu’au bout, Pierre Monatte critique violemment la direction confédérale de la C.G.T., dominée par les communistes. "En mai 1946, après le congrès confédéral, P. Monatte publia [cette] brochure. Il y faisait état des "débats fades et décevants" du congrès, s'étonnant qu'on n'eût pas discuté ni pris de positions fermes et révolutionnaires sur les grands problèmes: nationalisations, ravitaillement, vie chère, blocage des salaires, suspension du droit de grève. Il s'étonnait que la CGT pût "chanter des hymnes à la production", prendre des positions nationalistes. Il concluait: "Vous avez la chance de vivre une grande période du mouvement. Il ne s'agit pas de choisir entre le communisme et le désespoir. Le communisme, c'est aussi le désespoir pour après-demain, ou peut-être demain, pour tous ceux qui sont maintenant dans ses rangs, mais croient véritablement lutter pour l'émancipation du prolétariat. Au diable le désespoir et le soi-disant parti communiste qui foule aux pieds lutte de classes et internationalisme"." (Colette Chambelland)
