A mid-19th century biography of Sainte Élisabeth de Hongrie written by the French historian Charles Forbes René de Montalembert. An early edition of this work in a quarter calf binding. Ink inscription to the half title page and ink underlining to pages two and three. An abridged biography of the Catholic saint Élisabeth de Hongrie or Elizabeth of Hungary 1207-1231 ruler of Thuringia and a member of the Franciscan Third Order written by the French historian Charles Forbes René de Montalembert 1810-1870. Elizabeth of Hungary was known for her charity to the poor and for 'The Miracle of the Roses'. This biography was a success encouraging the publications of many other hagiographies. In a quarter calf binding. Externally fairly smart with some fading and shelf wear to the extremities and rubbing to the joints. Internally firmly bound. Pages are heavily spotted throughout. Veuve à l'âge de vingt ans elle refuse de se remarier et pour cette raison sa famille la chasse avec ses trois enfants. Son oncle l'évêque de Bamberg calme le jeu :E ele peut revêtir l'habit du Tiers-ordre franciscain. La famille ducale se charge des enfants. Elle ne garde pour elle qu'une pauvre demeure et met alors tous ses revenus au service des pauvres. Elle leur fait construire un hôpital. Elle meurt à 24 ans et est cannonisée en 1235. La dévotion à sainte Élisabeth est assez répandue en France dune part parce quelle est la patronne du Tiers-Ordre de saint François mais aussi en raison du succès que connut le présent ouvrage qui connut de nombreuses rééditions. unknown
