Text block is sunned soiling to lower edge and yellow discoloration to lower edge and fore edge. Top edge is sprayed black but is moderately rubbed and faded. Boards have moderate to heavy scuffing from shelf wear and rubbing bumping and heavy chipping to edges corners and ends of spine. Tear through leather at lower edge of rear board of volume two. Heavy wear to spine with rubbing and chipping to black leather detailing around title of volume one and volume number of volume two. Black leather is not present elsewhere. Binding is sound. Front board and front flyleaf is detached at both volumes and rear board of volume one is cracked but still holds. Strand unknown

Originally this was intended to be complete in two volumes with 'In Two Volumes' printed to the title page of the first two volumes however a third volume was added in 1815. Illustrated from his letters with occasional notes and narrative by John Lord Sheffield. With memoirs of his life and writings composed by himself. Illustrated with an silhouette portrait frontispiece to Volume I and an engraved frontispiece to Volume III. Some of the works are written in French. Shortly following Gibbon's death his good friend and literary executor John Lord Sheffield undertook to edit and in 1796 published the first of the Miscellaneous Works of Edward Gibbon in order that the reading public have an opportunity to gain a broader insight into the historian and his overall body of work. Edward Gibbon 1737 - 1794 was an English historian and Member of Parliament. His most important work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788.With an ink inscription of J. Harlow. Bound in full calf. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the extremities and joints causing some loss to the extremities of boards and spine. Joints are cracked but hinges remain firm due to internal reinforcements. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with offsetting to title page and a few marks. Volume 1 is in essentially fine condition apart from some very minimal foxing. Text unmarked and binding quite secure. Volume 2 has a small hole in the title page and penetrating as far as page 12 and on the blank rear free endpaper. Otherwise only mild occasional foxing unmarked text and secure binding. Overall this pair of volumes is in very nice condition. A two-volume anthology of Gibbons' lectures essays and correspondence. Most selections are in English but a substantial amount is in French. Full leather gilt rebacked scuffed and scratched bumped corners original covers darkened near the joints. This is the scarce first English translation of Gibbon's first book. Title page repaired and former owner's name written there minimal foxing and soiling with browning on the margins of the page after the title and the final page. 4 pp of ads present. This book is remarkably clean for its age. The original was written in French in 1761 and proved a success in Paris. 1796168797Basel: Printed and sold by J. J. Tourneisen 1796-97. First continental edition following the original London publication by Cadell & Davies earlier that year. The work includes the first appearance of Gibbon's autobiography titled the Memoirs of My Life which created the image of Gibbon which so fascinated the 19th century. Gibbon died in 1794 leaving his papers to John Baker Holroyd Lord Sheffield 1735-1821 then serving on the Board of Agriculture. Sheffield faced a monumental task not least in collating six different manuscripts of the Memoirs into one. Besides the autobiography Sheffield's edition collects much of Gibbon's correspondence several of his essays including one defending his arguments in the Decline and Fall and extracts from his journal. J. J. Tourneisen specialized in producing pirated versions of British and Scottish Enlightenment works for the continental market. Provenance: Georg Heinrich Thommen 1908-1956 a Swiss journalist with his blue ink stamp on the front free endpaper of each volume. That of Volume I also carries the inscription "To my dear friend dr. Rudolf Frowe. Xmas 1941. Heinrich Thommen." 7 vols bound in 3 octavo 202 x 127 mm. Text in English and French. Contemporary marbled paper boards spines with gilt decorative borders and red paper label edges red green silk bookmarkers. 19th-century bookplates of "V. A. B. Baron Bentinck" vol. I onlypossibly Willem van Aldenburg Bentinck 1848-1912 and of one "Dr Grauff" on front pastedowns.
