1849WRCAM19970London 1849. xxiv512pp. plus 6pp. of advertisements and errata slip. Modern half calf and marbled boards leather label. Very good. A classic work in the theory of colonization the culmination of Wakefield's attempt at a theory of colonization based upon scientific principles. His ideas influenced colonial officials and practices in Canada Australia and New Zealand and in the latter place Wakefield was instrumental in establishing a permanent British colony. "The importance of Wakefield's achievements in colonial matters can hardly be overestimated. The tangible fruits of his labours are the least part of their result for all subsequent colonial development has followed the direction of his thought" - DNB. FERGUSON 5235. 51821This career U.S. Army officer is often remembered as commander of the "Iron Brigade; while commanding the 2nd Division he was badly wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and his division took part in many major engagements including Gettysburg; after the war he led the expedition against Sitting Bull and fought Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. ALS 3pp lettersheet 5" X 8" Vancouver Barracks WA 13 July 1890. Addressed to Tompkins possibly MOH winner Brigadier General Charles H. Tompkins 1830-1915; or possibly his son Selah Reeve Hobbie Tompkins 1864-1939 who served under Gibbon at Fort Laramie Wyoming. Near fine. On letterhead of "Headquarters Dept. of the Columbia" which Gibbon commanded from 1886 to 1890 he writes: "Had you along been over I should have felt disposed to write you a letter of condolence. So the matter stands I send my congratulations. The thing has turned out fortunately for you personally. No one can now say you were jumped for personal or political reasons. I fear we shall now have appointments made in the Army on the principle Mr. Cleveland made them until he gets back again & until a change is made the Army must continue to be the football of politicians. I do not question the good qualities of the new QM Gen'l but it was not necessary to slap six others in the face in order to recognize them." Nicely penned in Gibbon's large clear script and signed in full at the close. Intriguing if cryptic content but given the Quartermaster General content the more likely recipient is Charles Tompkins who served in the Quartermaster Corps in the 1880s until retirement in 1894. The letter is tastefully double-matted in cream and green double sided with one portion displayed on verso alongside a 7¼" X 9¼" high-quality modern reproduction of a well-known head-and-shoulders portrait of Gibbon in uniform and an engraved 5" X 3½" plate listing his name birth/death years and brief text. A handsome presentation overall dimensions 23" X 18½ unknown

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire traces the trajectory of Western civilisation from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium and therefore spans a nearly 1500 year period from 98 to 1590 of the Roman Empire. Therefore Gibbon discusses the history of early Christianity the Roman State Church as well as the history of Europe. The popularity of this work rests on Gibbon's objectivity and heavy use of primary sources. In the eighteenth century the use of primary sources for historical was very rare which was why his work was extremely popular. His methodology also became a model for later historians. Edward Gibbon wrote many historical works but is best known for this title. This is due to its quality the use of primary sources as well as the open criticism of organised religions. The work earned him a reputation as the first modern historian of Ancient Rome. In uniform cloth bindings. Externally generally smart. Externally generally smart. 187634851Philadelphia: Claxton Remsen & Haffelfinger 1876. 6 volumes. A new edition to which is added a complete index of the whole work. With an engraved portrait frontispiece in volume one with tissue guard. 8vo in period bindings of three-quarter polished brown calf over marbled paper covered boards the spines very handsomely gilt tooled with a lattice in two compartments gilt lettering in two others and fine gilt tooling around a central gilt flower device in one other these all separated by delicately gilt stippled raised bands marbled endpapers and page edges. A nicely preserved set the text completely free of any foxing stains or spotting looking largely unused the bindings are firm and solid with strong hinges the calf with a little rubbing and general wear but with bright gilt. A very handsome set in contemporary bindings of the greatest historical work ever undertaken. The text is largely that of John Murray's 1846 edition and embodies the important notes of Rev. Milman.
It was in Italy while "musing amid the ruins of the Capital" that Gibbon formed the plan of his history. Originally published in six volumes from 1776 to 1788 Gibbon's fine scholarship has remained for the most part unchallenged. The work's numerous reprintings throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are evidence of its popularity and historical accuracy.
"For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship the keen criticisms of theological zeal and the steady researches of two centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work learned as it is that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition the boundless range the infinite variety and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" Adams Manual of Historical Literature pp. 146-147.
The success of the work was immediate. "I am at a loss" Gibbon wrote "how to describe the success of the work without betraying the vanity of the writer. The first impression was exhausted in a few days; a second and third edition were scarcely adequate to the demand and the bookseller's property was twice invaded by the pyrates of Dublin. My book was on every table and almost on every toilette." Publication of this grand work placed Gibbon at the "very head of the literary tribe" in Europe according to Adam Smith.
