Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good condition in their original purple cloth covered boards with faded gilt text on the spines and blind embossing on the front boards to include "House Document". Both are octavos of 8 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches with some fading to the cloth over the spines minor pencil notations on the front end sheet of Part 2 and pages 7 through 10 bound-in after page 14 and both volumes are moderately foxed throughout. Part 1 contains 417 pages of text and is illustrated with a frontispiece and 15 plates. Slight wear to binding tight. <br/><br/>Illustrated with 16 chromolithographs by Ackerman New York drawn by various artists. These two naval lieutenants split their exploring parties into two groups to survey a greater amount of the Amazon River Valley. This Part 1 covers Lt. Herndon's travels. Later as captain of the S. Lardner Gibbon. x339pp. 36 lithographed plates some tinted 2 hand-coloured folding lithographed maps appendix. 3. 3 lithographed folding maps 2 with hand-colouring. The expedition started in Peru and ended at the mouth of the Amazon. "An excellent book on the regions mentioned." - Borba de Moraes p.399 who lists just the three maps in the third volume this copy has two extra maps. In the original cloth the map case having been rebacked usually this book is found in appalling condition due to the poor quality of the paper. However this copy is particularly clean with very little browning of the text none on the plates and the maps are very good with only the occasional split. The covers on volume I are faded unevenly and volume II has been bound-in upside down. A very nice set of the first edition in the publisher's cloth. Binder for "Maps: part 1" has damage to the cloth leather is very good. Binder 2 is fine. All 5 maps one is actually a chart are very good to very fine. Only flaw is slight browing on 3 at the folds.
