Full marbled edging leather quarter spines that showcase the titles in gilt. There is minimal foxing within both volumes. The hardcovers and binding remain intact with wear around the edges from handling and age. Large duodecimo x 222 xxiv appendix pages plus a folding map of the world printed surface approximately 210 × 350 mm. Recent period-style half speckled calf and marbled boards retaining an early leather title-label and endpapers complete with the binder's stamp of 'Eedy Binder 37 Tavistock St'; minimal signs of age and use; essentially a fine copy. Written and published while Wakefield was serving a three year sentence in Newgate Gaol for abduction it first appeared as letters to the 'Morning Chronicle' from August to October 1829. Although Wakefield was not the originator of the theory of systematic colonization 'his was one of the earliest and clearest visions of an empire-by-consent' Pike. In this influential work he 'argued that if settlement were concentrated waste lands of the crown could be readily sold and the proceeds applied to the emigration of labourers preferably young married couples thereby giving maximum population relief in Britain and ensuring a balanced fruitful colonial society. Sufficiency of labour and a congenial society would attract capital encourage emigration assure prosperity and justify the rights of a colony to elect representatives to its own legislature' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. <p>The map in this copy is from the first issue dated 29 October 1829. <p>Provenance: Dr Robert Edwards AO 1930-2023; earlier 'withdrawn' stamp of Lincoln's Inn Library; with the bookplate of lawyer and antiquary Charles Purton Cooper KC 1793-1873 who in 1834 'presented to Lincoln's Inn Library two thousand volumes on civil and foreign legal works having previously presented a hundred and fifty volumes of American Law Reports' biographical fact-sheet from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Kent accessed on the United Industrious Lodge 31 website.
