First edition first issue of vol. 1 with errata uncorrected one of 500 copies half-titles that in vol. 1 a tipped-in later facsimile 3 folding engraved maps engraved portrait frontispiece after Reynolds and vol. 1 a4-b2 Contents bound in vol. 2 vol. 1 with later engraved portrait laid down as frontispiece with all cancels and errata as called for engraved bookplate later ink ownership name S. de Giles to rear pastedowns. While the first volume was on the press Strahan decided to increase the print run from 500 to 1000 copies; the second 500 or so copies constituting the second state have the errata corrected through p.183 here uncorrected. In very good condition with highly skilful repairs to spine ends and joints. A rare and very handsome complete first edition set of Gibbon’s masterpiece. "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" PMM 222. Strahan predicted the popularity of Gibbon's History and doubled the print run from 500 to 1000 copies during the publication process entailing the resetting of some sheets. Vol. I is in the first state with the cancellans leaves as described by Rothschild and the errata uncorrected. The gatherings a b and the author portrait are bound in the second volume. 38182Edinburgh Bell and Bradfute Peter Hill Silvester Doig A. Stirling and John Ogle 1811 Hardcover books A New edition 1811 in a twelve volume set . Illustrated with two maps by Thos. Kitchin of the Eastern and Western parts of the Roman Empire. Each book is bound in half-leather with decorated gilt panels to spine. The title panel and Volume Number panel in gilt on black. Marbled paper covered boards with brown endpapers. Each book carries the armorial bookplate of John James Lecky. Lecky was born in 1799 and was magistrate and deputy lieutenant of County Carlow where he served as High Sheriff in 1828. The books and contents are Very Good with light foxing in places. The maps are Very Good with the odd short closed tear to edges and in places poorly folded. Volume IV lacks it's Volume Number . The Bindings are firm and tight. There is some rubbing to covers as you would expect for books over 200 years old but they still have a pleasing antiquarian appearance. Pictures available. A very good set in contemporary full polished calf with morocco spine labels gilt compartments all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Outer joints neatly repaired in volume 5 some other joints with thin partial cracks and a notable chip to the top of volume 8. Other minor edgewear and occasinoal foxing to prelims but a clean sound handsome set. Occasional tiny stress tears to maps at their hinges but no foxing and the color fresh. An appealing mid-19th century edition of Gibbon's masterwork uncommon in this elaborate binding. John Murray hardcover
