The first edition of a pamphlet decrying the French Republic by counter-revolutionary reformer Jacques Mallet du Pan 1749-1800. A Genevan political journalist Mallet du Pan became a staunch Royalist after the outbreak of the French Revolution with his anti-revolutionary polemic leading the opposition to brand him an 'enemy of liberty'. In 1792 he was sent to entreat with the Emperor of Austria and King of Prussia in other hopes of convincing the rulers to support the troubled monarchy whilst absent his possessions were confiscated and he was thereafter unable to return to Paris. In 1793 whilst residing with the Archduke Charles in Brussels he published the notorious Considérations sur la nature de la Révolution de France et sur les causes qui en prolongent la durée 1793 in which he asserted that the weakness of the French had disgraced the entirety of Europe. The initial advertisement of Letter to a Minister encourages the reader to use this volume in preparation 'for a due exercise of pure British judgment and for a proper display of true British spirit'.
