Si le present volume contient moins de documents ceux-ci sont plus varies et se repartissent mieux dans le temps; contrairement au volume precedent le nombre de documents publics est important et illustre bien l'histoire de certaines cites particulierement a l'epoque hellenistique. Comme par le passe nous n'avons pas voulu presenter un catalogue laconique mais nous avons cru bon de pousser au maximum le commentaire des textes meme les plus humbles puisque ceux-ci constituent une des bases de l 'histoire des cites. Celle-ci a ete brievement dressee avant le corpus de chaque cite et sert de cadre au catalogue qui suit; le sous-titre de l'ouvrage "Epigraphie et histoire" indique l'importance attribuee peut-etre pour la premiere fois pour l'elaboration de cette synthese historique aux documents epigraphiques bien que les autres sources -litteraires numismatiques ou archeologiques- n'aient pas ete negligees. Ces éléments sont à l’origine de l’intérêt que portèrent plusieurs puissances à cette région depuis l’époque mycénienne et géométrique puis durant les époques archaïque et classique. La présente étude propose un examen synthétique des résultats issus de recherches géologiques et archéologiques récentes et des sources historiques tant littéraires que épigraphiques. Ce qui permet d’étudier sous un angle nouveau les entreprises coloniales des pionniers Eubéens et Thasiens leurs activités commerciales ainsi que les équilibres des forces politiques et économiques développés en Thrace depuis la période de la colonisation grecque jusqu’à la conquête par Philippe II. Au centre de cette étude se trouvent les ethné </em><em>indigènes dont le mode de vie combine l’élevage l’agriculture et l’activité minière. Leur cohabitation et leur collaboration depuis l’époque archaïque avec les colons grecs originaires d’Eubée et de Paros avec Athènes et Milet puis avec les Perses créèrent des conditions très favorables au renforcement des alliances économiques et militaires. Il ne faudrait donc pas s’étonner si à partir du début du Ve siècle avant J.-C. tant de Grecs et de peuples hétérogènes furent intégrés à des communautés politiques autonomes alliées aux Athéniens et au royaume de Macédoine.
