Joseph Berthelé (1858-1926) est le fondateur de la campanographie scientifique ; il fut archiviste du département des Deux-Sévres puis de l'Hérault. La préface de l'auteur précise que ce volume est presque entièrement un recueil d'articles parus dans divers recueils français ou étrangers au cours des années 1904 et 1905 et au commencement de 1906. Les cloches et les fondeurs y occupent une place assez considérable.
