RARE account of the ancient cultures of Musair, Meluhha and Maeen (Minaeans) in the Arabian peninsula by the renowned German archaeologist and Assyriologist Hugo Winckler (1863-1913), who uncovered the capital of the Hittite Empire (Hattusa) at Boğazkale, Turkey. Includes transliterations of ancient texts, b&w figures and a fold-out sheet containing a copy of a Minaean inscription. The second volume is an appendix, published shortly after the main paper. Bonne édition de cet essai fondateur, dans la traduction de référence du philologue et historien de l'art allemand Michael Huber (1727-1804) qui vécut à Paris. L'ouvrage est illustré de 27 planches gravées reproduisant 54 figures, précédées de trois tables et "d'explications des gravures". L'essai est précédé d'une préface de l'auteur et de "Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de la vie et des ouvrages de Winckelmann" en tête du premier volume (160 pages). "Premier historien de l'art au sens où nous l'entendons" (R. Mortier), fondateur de l'archéologie comme discipline, redécouvreur de l'Antiquité classique débarrassée de "l'hellénisme de pacotille qui plaisait à ses contemporains", Winckelmann est le père de l'esthétique théorique moderne. Sa conception du modèle grec survit jusqu'à nos jours et son oeuvre exerça une influence déterminante sur l'esthétique des Lumières. Diderot, en particulier, reconnaîtra son influence dans le 'Salon de 1765'. (Brunet, V, 1463. Conlon, 'Siècle des Lumières, 89:11289. Monglond I, 500). Défauts aux mors, coiffes, coupes et coins. (Reliure du XIXe). 1 f., V pp., (1) p., 295 pp., (1) p.ÉDITION ORIGINALE de la traduction de Henri Jansen (La Haye 1741 - Paris 1812) qui fut d’abord libraire à Paris, puis bibliothécaire de Talleyrand.Ce recueil contient plusieurs textes considérés comme le fondement de l’archéologie moderne : Réflexions sur l’imitation des artistes grecs dans la peinture et la sculpture, Réfléxions sur le sentiment du Beau dans les ouvrages de l’Art et sur les moyens de l’acquérir. Ces dernières sont adressées à Friedrich von Berg, beau jeune homme blond de vingt-cinq ans en qui Winckelmann voyait incarné la beauté grecque et à qui il écrivit des lettres pasionnées. Jansen donne aussi dans ce recueil : La lettre adressée à Wincklemann au sujet des Réflexions sur l’imitation des artistes grecs, Description de deux momies du Cabinet Electoral d’Antiquités à Dresde, Eclaircissements sur les Réflexions sur l’imitation des artistes grecs pour servir de réponse à un lettre sur ces réflexions, réponse pleine d’érudition, mais dénuée de persiflage, et De la Grâce dans les ouvrages d’art.Les deux premiers traités sont une apologie du corps masculin, idéalisé par la sculpture gréco-romaine. Rappelons que Winckelmann fut assassiné à Trieste par un jeune voyou qu’il avait entraîné dans son hôtel. Michel Larivière dans Homosexuels célèbres cite la phrase de Goethe dans l’essai qu’il consacré à Wincklemann : “Jamais, il ne m’a semblé plus vif et plus charmant que dans les instants où nous le trouvons en relation avec de beaux jeunes garçons” en acceptant la théorie selon laquelle seuls ceux qui sont émus par le nu masculin peuvent apprécier l’art antique.
