In "The Hill of Kronos", Peter Levi paints a radiant portrait of the Greece he came to know through a lifetime of exploration. As a young scholar he sought out its ancient spirit, the keys to its mythology and civilisation, in its ruined cities and majestic mountains. Later, as a priest working as a diplomat and a friend of the oppressed, he lived in Athens through the dark days of the dictatorship. Then the sinews of political life led back to secret alliances made during the civil war and the earlier occupation of Greece, back to murder, starvation and corpse-filled quarries. Lastly, it is seen through the mature eyes of a family man, with the ripened sensibility of an acclaimed poet. This is a precious fusion of experience, a gift of insight from one philhellene to all those who have come to love Greece. A very interesting and insightful book about Greece and the Greek people he got to know (and to help during the Junta years) 222p. illus (B & W drawings) index. Book

The earliest Olympic games began more than twenty-five-hundred years ago. What were they like, how were they organized, who participated? Were ancient sports a means of preparing youth for warfare? In this lavishly illustrated book, a world expert on ancient Greek athletics provides the first comprehensive introduction to the subject, vividly describing ancient sporting events and games and exploring their impact on art, literature, and politics. Using a wide array of ancient sources, written and visual, and including recent archaeological discoveries, Stephen Miller reconstructs ancient Greek athletic festivals and the details of specific athletic events. He also explores broader themes, including the role of women in ancient athletics, the place of amateurism, and the relationship between athletic events and social and political life. A source of information and enjoyment for anyone interested in the history of athletics and the origins of the world's most famous sporting event. "This is the first time that the long history of the Olympic institution has been traced with reference to social behaviour, sexual habits, and the aesthetic ideals of Classical antiquity. Were there any direct links between athletics and military training? Why did Greek athletes compete in the nude? How did the Romans change the games? The mythology and archaeology of Olympia is also explored, revealing the ways in which the Greeks elevated sporting prowess to heroic status - and a mode of divine gratification." 296p. illus ( B & W) bibliography.index Book
