Located foremost in the context of Lycian, Classical, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras, the archaeological finds at the photographed sites are dated back to a time scale ranging from approx. 7th Millennium BC to 5th century AD. Based on a selection of 56 remarkable archaeological complexes, the book contains 128 full-page color prints, a map and an index of the sites. More than 1300 additional 3D photos on DVD and a set of two 3D glasses are attached inside the book to guarantee full reading enjoyment. Das untere Drittel der Zeichnung sowie ca. 2 cm des rechten Randes wurden von Rebell korrigiert und mit dem neuen Entwurf überklebt, horizontale Mittelfalte geglättet, insgesamt etwas vergilbt. Vorstudie für ein Gemälde. Möglicherweise besteht ein Zusammenhang mit dem Auftrag für J. Murat 13 Ansichten von Neapel zu malen (s.u.).

Diese in der Regel vor der Natur entstandenen Studien verkaufte er allerdings nur, wenn ihn Geldnöte dazu zwangen. Bei der hier vorliegende Zeichnung kann es sich allerdings nicht um eine vor Ort entstandene Zeichnung handeln, da Reinhold selbst nie in Otranto gewesen ist. Vermutlich ist sie die Pause einer Zeichnung von J. Thürmer (1789-1833), der 1818 auf dem Weg nach Griechenland in Otranto auf das Schiff wartete, mit dem er die Reise fortsetzen konnte. In seiner Begleitung fanden sich damals seine Freunde und Kollegen F. Heger (1792-1836) und H. Hübsch (1795-1863).

Zeichnungen auf Pauspapier fertigte Reinhold in der Regel als notwendiges Arbeitsmaterial für die Ausführung von Gemälden an. Diese vor der Natur entstandenen Studien verkaufte er in einzelnen Fällen schweren Herzens, aber aus Geldnöten gezwungen. Bei dem Motiv handelt es sich möglicherweise um die Ruinen der Villa die Quintili, heute von den Römern auch Roma Vecchia genannt, gelegen an der Via Appia Antica. Literatur: Ausst.
