Les planches représentent des gemmes, cristaux, échantillons de roche, strates géologiques et cartes chromolithographiées; en outre, le texte comporte 91 figures sur bois dans le texte ou à pleine page. L'auteur donne ici des détails et explications sur la formation des pierres et leurs origines; il y analyse les pierres de France, puis celles de l'ensemble du globe, et étudie quelques pierres et métaux en particulier : l'or et l'argent, les marbres d'Italie, les mines de l'île d'Elbe, les houillères de l'Autunois et du Canal du Centre. Simonin (1830-1886) étudia à l'École des mines de Saint-Étienne. Il occupa divers postes en France et en Italie et fut chargé par le gouvernement d'effectuer plusieurs voyages aux États-Unis. Il se rendit de même à Cuba, aux Antilles, en Amérique centrale, au Panama et au Mexique. En 1867, il fut placé à la tête d'une commission française chargée d'étudier le tracé du chemin de fer du Pacifique et de réaliser les études préliminaires.
