1970000439Kaapstad: Van Riebeeck-vereniging 1970 Fragments from the diary of Adam Tas would actually have been a more accurate title for it is historically dangerous to forget that the officials allowed only those parts of the diary to survive which in their opinion placed Tas in an unfavourable light with the Seventeen. What remained of the The Hague copy of the diary was used as the foundation of this re-issue. The text was carefully collated with the Van Dessin-MS. The rules of the Utrecht Society for the Publication of Source Material were applied to facilitate the reading of the text. A new English translation was made by Dr. J. Smuts and is placed opposite the Dutch text as in the first edition. As far as the footnotes are concerned Dr. Fouche's footnotes have been translated into Afrikaans. Where amplification was considered necessary Prof. A. M. Hugo with the friendly collabo nation of Mr. J. van der Bijl of Stellenbosch made his knowledge available to the Van Riebeeck Society. Footnotes which do not occur in the original issue have been placed between square brackets in the re-issue with the initials of the persons responsible for the additional information. The Appendix which bears the hall-mark of Prof.Fouché'ssound knowledge of our historical past has been left unaltered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 403 pages with index and notes ---------- Orders of $100.00 or more are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
