Uit hierdie werk van hom sal blyk dat hy reeds as jongeling - 'n seun van agtien jaar - hom geroepe gevoel het om sy lot met sy volk in die worsteljare gedurende die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog in te werp. Daar het sover baie min uit die geskiedenis van daardie stryd in Kaapland in druk verskyn. Daarom is hierdie herinnerings van een van die jong Kolonialers wat aan die kant van die Republieke geveg het baie welkom. Diegene onder ons volk wat belangstel in daardie moedige vryheidstryd waarin soveel asberaden heid deur hom en ander seuns van ons volk aan die dag gelê is sal die werk van die skrywer met dank ontvang. Hy vertel daarin van sy eie ervarings en waarnemings gedurende die agtien maande wat hy onder komdt. Fouché in die Oostelike Provinsie geveg het en beskryf gebeurtenisse wat onvergeetlik sal bly in die geskiedenis van dapperheid en taaie volharding van hulle wat nie om eie voordeel of eie eer nie soveel gewaag en opgeoffer het. Kolonialers wat by die Republikeine aangesluit het het dit gedoen met die kennis dat die uiterste straf hulle wag as die oorwinning nie behaal kan word nie en hulle was meestal jong manne wat op die hoogste offer en die grootste gevare voorbereid was. In hierdie boek vertel die skrywer op heel beskeie wyse van die kommando se wedervaardighede waaraan hy geen geringe aandeel geneem het nie en hy skilder vir die leser die treffende omstandighede waaronder hy en sy medeburgers 'n ongelyke stryd teen die oormag van die vyand tot die einde gevoer het. Included: Of MUCH interest are a number of letters du Plessis wrote to his friend the journalist David Friedman who was working for SAPA at the time. 1. From Ottawa dated 23.11.'55 with envelope ; 2. From Ottawa dated 3.12.'55 ; 3. From Washington dated 12.4.57 the draft of the telegram mentioned is also included ; 4. From Washington dated 22 Julie 1957. All are handwritten and signed 'Wennie du Plessis'. Also included is an invitation for David Friedman to a Mayoral luncheon to 'say goodbye to Mrs Dora Sowden the Cinema and Music Critic of the Rand Daily Mail' on 29th December 1966. The invitation is signed by Dora Sowden. Press clippings are attached. Also include are number of press cuttings about Dora Sowden and her husband Lewis. There are two press clippings from 'The Citizen' newspaper from 1980 that are of a more political nature. 'The Citizen' was a secretly State funded newspaper to oppose the Rand Daily Mail. The book has a friendly gift inscription to David Friedman not from the author. The dustjacket has a clear cellophane protective cover. The dj is neat with some light wear and scuffing. The boards are neat and tidy. The contents are in excellent condition. The pages are clean clear very certain and comfortable. A well maintained and contented copy. fk.
