18293France Chanu Bayeux La Châtaigneraie Vendée Eighteenth century. On piece of 38 x 30 cm watermarked paper. In fair condition lightly aged. In red green and sepia. Within a border and with 'OCCIDENT' at the head 'ORIANT' at the foot 'MIDY' to the left and 'SEPTENTRION' to the right. Attractive in design with capital letters in red and simple tree design around the boders of fields. The map relates to a disputed right of way between landowners Jacques Guiot Maupas and a convent with such captions as 'Terres Des Maupas Appartenantes Pour La Plus Grande Parlyes du dict lieu de la niardiere et quy abutte au chemin' and 'Prez de la niardiere appartenant aux dames religieuses de lopital en contestaon pour le droit de passage'. First edition of this beautifully lithographed history and reproduction of the Bayeux tapestry illustrating the conquest of England by William the Conqueror and featuring a chromolith dedication to the Duchess of Northumberland. Bruce 1805-1892 was an accomplished artist and drawing master well known for his advocacy and promotion of the importance of Hadrian’s Wall who published “The Roman Wall†in 1851 and after a subsequent trip to Normandy conceived the idea of a facsimile and lectures on the Bayeux and is still stored in the Library of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. This is a very good hardcover copy in a very good dust jacket with just light edge wear. Completely clean inside and out. Text in Portuguese. Probably the finest collection of Brasilian furniture and decorative arts. Most of the works illustrated are furniture, over 160 pieces, the earliest from the 17th century and continuing through the 20th century. Also a section on decorative arts and a much smaller section on paintings. Essays by several writers including Delia Beru, Gloria Bayeux, Jose Wilton Guerra, Maria Helena Brancante, Maria Helena Estrada, Maria Ruth Amaral Sampaio, and Marlene Milan Acayaba. 11" high X 8" wide, 319 pages. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
