First edition of this beautifully lithographed history and reproduction of the Bayeux tapestry illustrating the conquest of England by William the Conqueror and featuring a chromolith dedication to the Duchess of Northumberland. Bruce 1805-1892 was an accomplished artist and drawing master well known for his advocacy and promotion of the importance of Hadrian’s Wall who published “The Roman Wall†in 1851 and after a subsequent trip to Normandy conceived the idea of a facsimile and lectures on the Bayeux and is still stored in the Library of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. The folding key is designed to be left open for reference as the plates are examined. A beautiful copy.
