First edition of this beautifully lithographed history and reproduction of the Bayeux tapestry illustrating the conquest of England by William the Conqueror and featuring a chromolith dedication to the Duchess of Northumberland. Bruce 1805-1892 was an accomplished artist and drawing master well known for his advocacy and promotion of the importance of Hadrian’s Wall who published “The Roman Wall†in 1851 and after a subsequent trip to Normandy conceived the idea of a facsimile and lectures on the Bayeux and is still stored in the Library of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne.
