Eisenhower" on an Eisenhower Farm Gettysburg Pennsylvania bookplate. The recipient Thomas S. Gates is mentioned numerous times in both of these volumes. "To replace Neil McElroy as Secretary of Defense I prevailed on Secretary of the Navy Tom Gates to delay his return to private life. He first took the post of Deputy Secretary for the duration of Mr. McElroy's term and then in December assumed the post of Secretary of Defense. His political career served eight different presidents including most notably as presidential advisor to his brother John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.<br /> <br /> <br /> He served as president of three major American universities: Kansas State University 1943-1950 Pennsylvania State University 1950-1956 and Johns Hopkins University 1956-1967. In 1971 Eisenhower returned to Johns Hopkins as president temporarily when the acting president resigned suddenly. He trained then Provost Steven Muller who was officially given the position in 1972. He also refers to the text of the book mentioning his view on the Foreign service and wishing Mrs Englehard and her commission every success. The book is near fine with just a little creasing to the edges of the dustwrapper. Housed in a blue cloth covered chemise and fine blue morocco leather spined slip case. Spine with raised bandsdecorated with stars and spots. Compartments ruled in blind lettered and decorated in gilt. Blue cloth on boards. --- Milton was the Younger brother of Dwight D.
