013385Paris: Briand. Original Calf. A Very Good Matched Set/No Dust Jacket as Issued. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 5 volume set bound in contemporary calf. Very scarce. The author Charles Jean-Francois Henault 1685-1770 wrote the work which was translated into many languages including Chinese. Voltaire said that he was "the only man who taught French history". In these volumes his successors continue the account unto the decade just before the French Revolution. This was the last set issued during the Ancien Regime. It covers the history of France from Louix XIV to Louis XVI in 1783. There was still no understanding by most of the government leaders how deep the economic crisis was. The Assembly of Notables were to be convened in 1787 only to disband when they rejected the stop gap fund to spend more to get out of the economic crisis. It was in 1789 when Louis XVI made the fateful decision to convene the Estates-General. Seldom do the five volume sets appear and in the last volumes much is made of the political events notes of the United States but mainly a continuation of the history. Volume III lacks the original gilt lettered black morocco label else a remarkable set. Various publishers with Briand among the most prominent. Briand unknown books
