The Monroe Doctrine was a United States policy of opposing European colonialism in The Americas beginning in 1823. It stated that further efforts by European nations to take control of any independent state in North or South America would be viewed as "the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States". At the same time, the doctrine noted that the U.S. would recognize and not interfere with existing European colonies nor meddle in the internal concerns of European countries. The Doctrine was issued on December 2, 1823 at a time when nearly all Latin American colonies of Spain and Portugal had achieved or were at the point of gaining independence from the Portuguese and Spanish Empires. A tourist guide for over twenty years, Ahmet Faik Ozbilge wrote this book after studying and walking over every inch of Fener, Balat and Ayvansaray, three ancient neigborhoods of the Golden Horn. The book starts off with the Church of St. Savior in Chora, now Kariye Museum, and traces the ancient Byzantine walls passing through Balat and Fener all the way to Cibali. Though rather long, this is a circular route around which it is possible to walk in one day passing synagogues, churches, mosques, palaces, dungeons, tombs, dervish lodges, fountains and Turkish baths in neigborhoods where once inhabited by Jews, Greeks, Bulgars, Moldavians, Wallachians, emperors, sages, drunkards, dervishes and other colorful denizens of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 12 cm). Edition in English. 132 p., color ills. The Roman theater at Nicaea: An archaeological guide. The city of Nicaea was located near a large lake and fertile plain, which was the main reason of city's importance through the ages. Notable for its climate and geographical features, it was a socio-political and economic centre of the Bithynia. It has always been one of the most important cities in the region during the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuks and Ottoman periods. Although the Roman Theatre is the most striking structure of the city, other architectural remains such as tombs, bridges, aqueducts, city walls and gates are still standing. The Roman theatre at Nicaea is located in the southwestern part of the city, close to the city walls and Lake Iznik (Ascania Limme). One of the most impressive archeological buildings in Anatolia, the theatre has been a frequent destination for western travellers for many years. The first scientific studies on the theatre were conducted in 1938 by A. M. Schneider in order to have a better idea of the substructures. The excavations revealed that the theatre was built on a Hellenistic stratum. Although it ceased to function as a theatre in the Late Roman Period (4th cent. AD), it was used for different purposes in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
