It was a place to see its own beauties witth the possibility to see the other side also and it became a zone for the engraving masters. We prepared a very beautiful exhibition following this art and history. During five hundred years since the beginning of the engraving until our days, we prepared some documents of engraving which brought to us the daily life of Üsküdar in ancient times and we collected them by the title of Üsküdar. Victoria Clark travelled across most of Eastern Europe to write Why Angels Fall. Having worked as a journalist in Romania, the former Yugoslavia and Russia for six years, she was fascinated by the Eastern Orthodox churches and keen to unravel their history and beliefs. To do so she journeyed from Mount Athos, to Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Russia, Cyprus and finally Istanbul, interviewing clergy and other believers. We're treated to a series of vivid cameos, a few of whose subjects glow almost visibly with holiness, a few terrify and many show qualities rare and needed in the West. As Clark puts it, after the ancient split between eastern and western Christianity, "each side lost something it could not happily do without . at the risk of over-simplifying for the sake of clarity, western Christendom can be said to have lost its heart, eastern Christendom its mind." Her keenness to explain Orthodoxy to westerners stems from a fear that the continent is in the process of fracturing along a thousand-year-old fault line, between the Catholic and Protestant west and the Orthodox east. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.
