A clean very tight copy with slightly marked boards and bumping to lower corners and upper edge. Slight bump to lower corner of all pages. Page edges slightly dusty. Very scarce. 209pp. An attempt at the negro history of Africa including the beginnings, Carthage, Roman, the church, Vandals, Moslems, Arabs, Mali, Songhai, Portuguese, slavery and the Koromantee. There is also a brief written note loosely slipped in by previous owners explaining how they knew the author and how he died.
Book has shelfwear and rubbing. A bit of colour loss along joint. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; 164 pages
Former owner's name from 1864 written on ffep. Map of the northern Portion of Tunis facing page 245 is missing. Map facing page 17 is missing bottom third. Edgeworn corners. Not in WorldCat not auction records or on line listing located - very rare. cgc. ~ Thaschus Caecilius Cyprianus converted to Christianity later in life and rose through the ecclesiastical ranks to become Bishop of Carthage. Cyprian's leadership was notable during the reign of the Roman emperor Decius who attempted to eradicate Christianity and those who professed it. Cyprian remained steadfast in defending the Christian faith and encouraging the persecuted in spite of his own impending martyrdom. His writings serve as historical documents of the spiritual guidance and discipline practiced during the early establishment of the Church. Cyprian's epistles have been published many times in various editions. This edition is a fine example of the 18th century font used at the Jesuits' press in Tyrnavia Hungary. Tyrnaviae. Small paper label at base of spine "Trinity College Library" stamped beneath it. 15 x 10 1/4 inches joints very good tight. College library bookplate at front card pocket at back. Title page printed in red & black is somewhat edge-tattered with old repair on verso. The text is complete. There are 40 leaves of preliminaries including "Index operum omnium" "Index S. Scripturarum toto opere citatarum" and "Index alphabeticus" plus one leaf half-title page. Then pp. 1-72 skips p. nos. 15-16 without loss of text; 1-244; 1-240 p. 216 misnumbered as 198; 1-40; 1-110 skips page nos. 57-58 with no loss of text; 52 misnumbered as 42 72 as 27; 1-72; 4 1-118; 1-37. Counted and complete. Text is in good condition with some marginal stains foxing pinhole worming in the margins; one leaf with short tear in the margin. This edition first published in 1682 at Oxford; the text is in Latin with some Greek. The works of Saint Caecilius Cyprianus c. 210-258 Bishop of Carthage in which city he was born and died.
