Carthage originally founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC became a powerful city-state and later an empire known for its maritime dominance and conflicts with Rome during the Punic Wars1 folding plate. Ancient Carthage was a Semitic civilization located in North Africa. Originally established as a settlement in what is now Tunisia it evolved into a city-state and subsequently an empire. Founded by the Phoenicians in the ninth century BC Carthage attained its peak in the fourth century BC becoming one of the largest cities in the world at that time. Size: 18 x 30 cms. Title leaf browned and with early annotations terminal leaf soiled detached and creased with loss at gutter touching a few letters. A scruffy but complete copy. First edition of these translations by Joannes Ernestus Grabe of "De Unitate Ecclesiae" and another untraced treatise accompanied by ample commentary. Grabe 1666- 1711 is regarded by some as ".certainly the most outstanding patristic and biblical scholar of late seventeenth-century England - DNB. Something of a mongel as far as book production: the first 51pp. of text are followed by the errata and 4pp. of adverts; then follows the second part beginning a new register interupted by a general title at pp. 33/4 for the "Exposition" and its Preface.
