Sven Hassel (pseudonimo di Willy Arberg) è nato nel 1917 in Danimarca. A vent'anni lascia il suo Paese in cerca di lavoro e si arruola nell'esercito tedesco. Diserta dopo l'invasione della Polonia. Arrestato, viene trasferito in una compagnia di disciplina. A guerra finita avrà combattuto su tutti i fronti, tranne che in Nord Africa. Quest'esperienza è la diretta fonte di ispirazione del ciclo di romanzi bellici che, a partire da Maledetti da Dio, gli hanno dato grande notorietà internazionale. An historian and lawyer, Robinson (1889-1977) was born in what is now Lithuania and graduated from the University of Warsaw law school. He helped establish a Hebrew school system after WWI, and in 1922 was admitted to the bar and elected to the young Lithuanian parliament. As the Nazis gathered power in Germany, Robinson put together a secret committee to protect Jewish rights, and used his position and connections to help German Jews emigrate to Lithuania. In 1940, he left Lithuania for New York, where he continued to work for European Jewry, establishing the Institute of Jewish Affairs, assisting the prosecution at the Nuremburg trials, helping the UN establish the Human rights Commission, and drafting Israel's Reparation Agreement with West Germany.
