Printer's device on each title page. Decorative headpieces and initials. 3-volume set printed at Leyden by the heirs and the widow of Jean Elzevier. This second edition of the famed French Field-Marshal memoirs was published the same year than the original edition. A great favourite of King Henri IV de Bassompierre proved himself during the war against the Turks 1603 and during the Huguenot rising of 1621-22 which won him the promotion to the rank of marshal of France. His "Mémoires" are an important source for the history of his time. Age wear on binding with heavy rubbing on spines and along edges. Head and tail of spines chipped. Armorial bookplate of “Henricus Liber Baro de Gudenus†on each front pastedown. Contemporary previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper of third volume Melle de Brabant. A detailed and faithful portrait of the French court under the reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII written during the authors imprisonment in the Bastille. He was confined there in 1631 by Richelieu when the latter discovered his secret marriage to the Princesse de Condi which implicated him in the plot to overthrow the Cardinal.
