The fourteen miles between Falaise and Argentan have come to be known simply as the Falaise Gap. Because Eisenhower was unable to maintain Allied military solidarity, between 12 and 21 August 1944 it became the escape route for over 100,000 German troops fleeing the Normandy battlefields. A valuable addition to the literature of the aftermath of Overlord.

Deborah Quaile has documented and compiled treasured photographs and information about the life of famed Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery' during the years that she lived in Norval, Ontario (1926 to 1935). Lucy Maud Montgomery, (always called "Maud" by family and friends) and publicly known as L. M. Montgomery, (November 30, 1874-April 24, 1942) was a Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery came to the village of Norval, Ontario with her husband, the Rev. Ewan Macdonald, who had been appointed minister of Norval and Union Presbyterian Churches, and their sons, Stuart and Chester. In addition to running the manse, teaching Sunday School and other parish duties, she became a member of the Choral Society and director of Norval's Olde Tyme Concerts held at the Anglican Parish Hall. As well, she found time to host garden parties on the lawn of the Presbyterian Church. The village was very dear to Montgomery's heart, and she photographed and recorded in her diary her favourite walking spots along the Credit River and along Russell's Hill of Pines. The people of Norval are proud of its former resident and in this special book Deb has recorded L.M. Montgomery's village life for others to appreciate. This is a beautifully prepared book, mixing interesting stories, history and images of the places and items that were important to the world-famous author of Anne of Green Gables. 209p. illus, index. bibliography. "The stories collected here depict a wonderful assortment of Montgomery's strong and independent "old maids" who have not been pining for Prince Charming, and for whom marriage is a pleasant addition to a perfectly satisfactory life. There are a number of younger heroes and heroines too, whose courtships are complicated by lovers' misunderstanings or obstinate parents. " Ephraim Weber (1870-1956) was a struggling young writer when he began corresponding with L.M. Montgomery (1874-1942) in 1902, six years before she published her first novel. Webers initial letter was that of an admirer. Montgomery responded warmly, and the two quickly began a correspondence that became an intellectual mainstay for both of them over the following forty years. After Green Gables is a fascinating collection of letters sent by Montgomery to Weber between 1916 and 1941. This was the period of Montgomerys greatest literary success, but privately she was deeply troubled by her unhappy marriage. The letters, revealing an intense social and intellectual dynamic between Montgomery and Weber, cover, among other subjects, their strong differences of opinion on matters such as pacifism and war and their joint rejection of the effects of literary modernism. Drawing on Webers voluminous correspondence with other Canadian figures ,particularly journalist Wilfred Eggleston, editors Paul Tiessen and Hildi Froese Tiessen skilfully illuminate Webers interaction with Montgomery, especially in matters concerning literature and culture, religion and politics, and education and entertainment. The editors provide various readings of Weber, based on his aspirations as a writer, his active participation in the Canadian culture of his day (including his friendships with hometown schoolmate William Lyon Mackenzie King and community leader Leslie Staebler), and his heritage as a Mennonite. After Green Gables brings to life a distinctly Canadian literary and intellectual association of writers. Montgomerys letters to a man committed to writing and to the cultural development of Canada reveal her intellectual preoccupations and her personal hardships. This is an essential text for Montgomery fans and scholars as well as readers with an interest in the development of Canadas literary culture. (Paul Tiessen is a professor in the Department of English and Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. Hildi Froese Tiessen is an associate professor in the Department of English and the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies at Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo.) 320p. bibliography. index Review copy sheet laid in Book
8vo., First Edition, with fine portrait frontispiece and 65 plates and maps (a number full-page) on 39; red cloth, gilt back, red top, a near fine copy in price-clipped dustwrapper. One of the key military memoirs of the twentieth century, this is as much an autobiography as a soldier's account of war. Written entirely by 'Monty' himself (in pencil, as so many of his official communications were composed), this characteristically straightforward (and often politically outspoken) account covers boyhood, early service with the Warwickshires, WWII and beyond (notably, about a third of the work covers his post-war career as CIGS and after). For technical military detail we look to the author's other works; here we find the simple account of a 'soldier who kept the faith'. A great read from one of the unforgettable leaders of our times. Baxter, 268; Enser, p.277.
