8vo., First Edition, with fine portrait frontispiece and 65 plates and maps (a number full-page) on 39, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper; red cloth, gilt back, red top, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter with one short closed tear on front panel and lightly browned on (predominantly white) rear panel. One of the key military memoirs of the twentieth century, this is as much an autobiography as a soldier's account of war. Written entirely by 'Monty' himself (in pencil, as so many of his official communications were composed), this characteristically straightforward (and often politically outspoken) account covers boyhood, early service with the Warwickshires, WWII and beyond (notably, about a third of the work covers his post-war career as CIGS and after). For technical military detail we look to the author's other works; here we find the simple account of a 'soldier who kept the faith'. A great read from one of the unforgettable leaders of our times. Baxter, 268; Enser, p.277.

1989150795London / New York: Routledge 1989. Hardcover. VG- Slight wear to top edge of dj; some instances of pencilled underlings and handwritings in text; otherwise clean. Maroon cloth gilt letters on spine beige & illus. dust jacket 342 pp. "Examines the marriage of British peers to American women within the context of the opening up of London and New York society and the growing competitiveness for high social status. In London American women were often blamed for the growing hedonism and materialism of smart society and for poaching in the marriage market. They were invariably described as frivolous vain and calculating -- a description which points to the simmering anti-American sentiment in Britain. It was even suggested that titled Americans were having a detrimental effect on the British peerage because of their failure to produce male heirs. This is a brilliant analysis of the reasons why American women were viewed pejoratively not only in terms of anti-American feeling in Britain and the social transformation of the British upper class but also the threat of women who did not appear to conform to aristocratic notions of a peeress's duties as a wife and mother." dj. 2013405175Pennsylvania: Penn State University Press 2013. In fine condition. 8vo. 233 pages. Cloth; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION. "Each of the five volumes in the Stone Art Theory Institutes series and the seminars on which they are based brings together a range of scholars who are not always directly familiar with one another's work. The outcome of each of these convergences is an extensive and "unpredictable conversation" on knotty and provocative issues about art. This fourth volume in the series Beyond the Aesthetic and the Anti-Aesthetic focuses on questions revolving around the concepts of the aesthetic the anti-aesthetic and the political. The book is about the fact that now almost thirty years after Hal Foster defined the anti-aesthetic there is still no viable alternative to the dichotomy between aesthetics and anti- or nonaesthetic art. The impasse is made more difficult by the proliferation of identity politics and it is made less negotiable by the hegemony of anti-aesthetics in academic discourse on art. The central question of this book is whether artists and academicians are free of this choice in practice in pedagogy and in theory" the publisher.

Penn State University Press hardcover books

198126406Los Angeles: Sagebrush Inc. Near Fine. c.1981. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket a touch of wear at base of spine otherwise a nice clean copy virtually as new. B&W and color photographs facsimiles INSCRIBED fulsomely and SIGNED by the author on the title page: "For ____ / With thanks / Hope you & your / friends enjoy these / GM years for long / & often / Always / George Montgomery / 1994." Everything you always wanted to know and then some more and then some more after that about the husky darkly handsome actor who is best remembered for -- quick name a classic George Montgomery movie! betcha can't. Starting out as a stuntman in serials and B-westerns in the 1930s Montgomery had a decent if unspectacular career as a leading man during the 1940s and 1950s subsequently appearing in both movies and TV he starred in his own series "Cimarron City" in 1958/59 while also branching out into directing and writing. Offscreen he was quite the accomplished fellow showing real talent as a painter sculptor and furniture craftsman -- all of which activities are extensively showcased within this elaborately-produced tome along with a full treatment of his career in movies on TV and on the stage. There's also quite a bit on his art collection -- apart from the art he created himself -- including mini-biographies of a number of the artists whose work he collected. NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. ALSO NOTE that a "DeLuxe" slipcased edition of this book was also issued but this ain't it. Signed by Author . Sagebrush Inc. hardcover books
