Both volumes feature idyllic fore-edge paintings: the first of a woman and a boy holding hands as they walk a road with large trees on either side in the foreground and copses of trees in the distance; the second depicts two figures rowing a canoe down a stream with a village in the distance. Each appears to be by the same artist. Corners a bit rubbed with evidence of minor restoration to spine head and foot ink name on front endpaper of each volume. 1840 Small Hard Cover. xi 171; 208 12 pp. 12mo. Volumes one and two of what was ultimately a six-volume set of Montgomery's collected poems. The presence of fore-edge paintings on these volumes is somewhat unusual as traditionally this was done on leather-bound volumes often quite a bit larger than these and the practice in general was considerably more common in the 18th century and earlier. That being said these are ably done so it is clear that they are not the work of an amateur and it is possible someone commissioned a contemporary artist to do the entire set and these are the volumes that remain. His poetry while it sold well during his lifetime is remembered best as the victim of excoriating reviews by John Wilson in Blackwood's and Thomas Babington Macaulay in the Edinburgh Review. 193291Various places 1932. Very good. Seventy-five items plus six small notebooks and one folio scrapbook. Some wear and soiling to a few items but condition generally clean and quite good. Extensive archive of transit information for the cities of Lima Peru and Santiago Chile compiled by traffic expert M.T. Montgomery of Lancaster Pennsylvania. Based near Lima Montgomery gathered information on bus rail chauffeur and rail-less trolley travel. Included here are manuscript notes and recommendations typed reports his pocket notebooks travel ephemera printed tracts and booklets and more. A repurposed ledger serves as a scrapbook holding 120 pages of Spanish-language newspaper clippings documenting traffic conditions and issues. The archive contains about thirty-five pieces of travel-related ephemera -- bus tickets calling cards transit passes -- from Montgomery's time in South America. There is a large broadsheet advertising the fiestas for Carnaval complete with a map of the festivities on the back. . Also present is a blueprint plan of Lima showing the omnibus service routes in 1927 and a mimeographed study on the bus service between Santiago and San Bernardo. In his work Montgomery points out the traffic chaos in the region and the associated difficulty of making profit under the current rate for fares. He provides a list of recommendations for ameliorating the situation including "All taxis until further notice will work only 20 days per month which will reduce the vehicles on the streets ." Other memos include "High Spots of Improvements Made in Tramway Service in Cordoba - Mendoza - Santa Fe - Tucuman & Parana"; "Personal Views Regarding Points Discussed at Tramway Managers Meeting"; and "A Few Facts about Schedules: One Man's Opinion." He also recommends that businesses building factories in South America not hire Latin American managers lest they lose control of their customer base. Montgomery appears to have been worried about the threat of Communism as well as there are a handful of manuscripts and pamphlets documenting the dangers of that political bent. A wonderful trove of information on an unusual subject giving the perspective of an American specialist on the issues of traffic and transportation in South America. unknown books

Referring to the green shirted mouse with pen in hand Flagg writes "He's my stooge - does my king size stuff." 201911493Ft. Lauderdale FL 2019. Artist's book unique an altered book signed by the artist on the rear pastedown "DKrause." Page size: 5 x 8 inches; 20pp. Bound by the artist: in the original boards of a used copy of the 100th anniversary edition of this children's classic. The artist removed the covers spine and eight illustrations and inserted a strip of ochre leather which became the new spine. Details from the original black and white illustrations were then watercolored and placed on botanically-printed pages. The whole was then bound using original boards of anniversary edition and a slipcase made using the original spine of the book. The artist's title ANNE with an e is written in pencil by the artist below the cover portrait of "Anne." taken from a postcard. This altered book was occasioned by the artist's visit to Charlottetown PEI the setting for Montgomery's story. unknown books
18460Two letters; one typed and signed and the other entirely hand-written; the first on James Montgomery Flagg 340 West 57th Street New York City letterhead and typed signed in red crayon "Monty" a very amusing and irreverent letter obviously to a close friend dated "Indegardampendence Day 1944" 1944 artistically spaced beneath; the addressee 'Paul' from internal evidence was apparently an executive at CBS radio and for whom Flagg worked on occasion stating in part: "Dear Paul - One of my most favorite characters of fiction and Lousey but Beloved Bastard of Modern Times; Snir; There is a despicable weakness in my otherwise robust ego that lets me write to you on my Model T Corona. I would think my Pride would stop me knowing as I do that you not only will ignore it but in all likelihood wont even read my letter: Maybe you cant read! So you went into advertising. What is this magnetism you use on me It cant be entirely the hope that I can wangle jobs out of you; And yet what HAVE you got but money You certainly are not pretty!.a friend gave Flagg a book on Velasquez.I pored over it and decided there wasn't such a chasm between Velasquez and me as you would hastily imagine. Except he couldn't illustrated Galsworthy-nor think up Nervy Nat while putting out a pair of clean shorts for Philip IV. You have noticed that Velasquez is NOT listed in Who's Who!." and more comparing his talent and lambasting that of Franz Hals Howard Chandler Christy and Hamilton Fisher; evidently Flagg was asking about painting a portrait and ends with ".For the love of Mary and Michael Joseph answer this for-free proposal! Don't be a mucous-minded small-town Equine-Brioche!"; the second letter undated and seemingly from the same period of time and also addressed to "Paul" written in black ink on two sides of plain paper and referring to additional portrait work Flagg is complaining about bothersome staff and getting paid for his efforts; He jibes Paul with ".Did you get a copy of Owen Wister's "Ancient Grudge" I told you I'd like to read it on the air- I doubt if you heard me as you were sitting in a dark corner making fond caricatures of me at the time!." Flagg goes on to speak of other sitters he has had or not been able convince for a portrait painting sitting mentioning a Mrs. Berwith Sgnr. Martinelli most probably Giovanni Martinelli Italian opera singer at the Lotos Club and comparing refusals because of 'busyness" to the fact that FDR found the time to have his portrait done; with suitable funny ranting about calling Martinelli a ".shirt with a voice in it!."; Flagg calls Mrs. Berwith ".she is nothing but a girdle with an angel in it."; Flagg signs in ink "Monty" with the admonishment below "Now pay attention to this letter!" and with a wonderful self-portrait caricature in pencil colored in red crayon and with finger pointing at the sentiment above; letters are perhaps addressed to Paul Kesten who was Vice President of the fledgling CBS Radio network at this time during the WWII years; James Montgomery Flagg 1877-1960 American illustrator cartoonist perhaps most famously remembered for his fabulous poster art especially of the patriotic variety during the U.S. involvement in wars; typed letter one-sided; script letter is two sided; some edge tips wear and old lines; some age-darkening; very good condition and wonderful content revealing the humor and personality of this famous American illustrative artist. . The unbound script largely yellow and blue revision pages dated 7/16 through 8/3 1962 is predominantly a carbon typescript with several ribbon typescript pages both on onionskin and 27 mimeograph duplication pages with a single dialogue annotation on page 26-A and page and scene number annotations on all mimeograph pages in holograph ink. This is the first of this Canadian author's writings to appear from a Canadian publisher and is dedicated "to the memory of the gallant Canadian soldiers". The title poem "The Watchman" was read at Montgomery's funeral. One of the more difficult of her books to obtain in decent condition. A printed title page bearing the imprint Eagle Book and Job Printing Department of Brooklyn-New York and the date 1902 states: "This play was acted by the author's brother Mr. Otis Skinner". Otis Skinner a prominent 19th Century actor was also the father of the actress Cornelia Otis Skinner. A frontispiece portrait of the author is bound in. Charles Skinner 1852-1907 born in Victor New York was editor of the Brooklyn Eagle and wrote a well-regarded study of a former editor/writer there Walt Whitman - "Whitman As Editor" - which was published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1903. Villon the Vagabond was one of his more popular works. He collected and published American Indian myths and legends as well as works of natural history. Binding a bit scuffed. Signed on the title page in blue ink by the film’s star Henry Silva using his name as well as that of his character Johnny Cool. Accompanying is the screenplay creation archive belonging to the film’s producer Milton Ebbins consisting of 335 pages of drafts and rewrites used in creating the screenplay consisting of original ribbon typescript carbon typescript and typed pasteups. With extensive pencil rewrites corrections and commentary about the direction of the screenplay on many of the pages. Very good condition. Considered one of the classics of neo Film Noir the film was directed by William Asher and starred Henry Silva in the title role Elizabeth Montgomery Richard Anderson Jim Backus Joey Bishop Sammy Davis Jr. and Telly Savalas. The film tells the story of the lives and loves of Italian and American gangsters. A very strange and usual crime film that is even more remarkable in that director William Asher is best remembered for previously directing the largest number of episodes 107 of the great comedy classic - I Love Lucy. Filming Johnny Cool was a 180 degree turn for the director. An amazing archive showing in detail the details and lengths that were taken to craft the screenplay and such a collection is rarely found dealing with a significant film. Pike made the first American exploration of the Southwest under US government auspices: it is consequently the foundation of any collection on that area. Most of this region was Spanish territory at the timewhich led to Pike's arrest with his entire party above Santa Fe; he was sent to Chihuahua for trial. After considerable delay and the confiscation of all his notes maps etc. he was escorted through Texas back to Louisiana. Pike called attention to the weakness of the Spanish defenses and the importance of the Santa Fe trade. The American first edition came out in 1810 in a very confused textual state; the British edition is much clearer due to the editor Rees who "undertook to brink something like cosmos out of this chaos . by weaving as much as he could of the matter of the Appendixes into the main text or into the footnotes thereto thereby greatly reducing the bulk of the appendicial texts." Coues quoted in Wagner-Camp. The folding map shows some minor foxing common with this map; otherwise the text is quite clean and fresh. The binding is 19th century 3/4 calf over marbled boards. File copy belonging to the film's director Ken Hughes with a typescript note tipped on to the title page requesting its return to the director and noting it is the only script in existence for the film. <br/><br/>Peter Finch delivers a strong performance as the inimitable author Oscar Wilde in this film about Wilde's sodomy trial after his affair with Lord Alfred Douglas lifted in large part from the historical court records. One of two films about Wilde released in May of 1960 the other being director Gregory Ratoff's "Oscar Wilde." In order to compete with the other Wilde film production on "The Trials of Oscar Wilde" was made in only nine weeks from start to finish with filming wrapping a mere two weeks before the London opening. Composer Ron Goodwin was recording music before scenes were filmed most scenes were filmed in one take and four editing rooms were set up working in parallel during principal photography in order to deal with the rushed timeline. <br/><br/>Shot on location in England. <br/><br/>Green wrappers with a typescript title label. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl Anne Shirley who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Like her readers the author was quite taken with the jovial character she had created and wrote multiple sequels to this first installment of what would become a beloved children's series. 1st Edition.
