Author's name sticker to front cover verso. Very good-plus. Marion Montgomery's 1925-2011 personal copy of his first book of poetry. He taught English at the University of Georgia for over thirty years and was a prolific writer publishing three novels a volume of short stories poetry numerous works of literary criticism and a number of books applying the Thomistic tradition to modern culture and American literature. Montgomery's magnum opus is often considered to be his trilogy The Prophetic Poet and the Spirit of the Age-more commonly known by their individual titles: Why Flannery O'Connor Stayed Home Why Poe Drank Liquor and Why Hawthorne was Melancholy-in which he evaluates the American popular spirit from a Thomistic perspective. His literary and poetic works were influenced by the Fugitive-Agrarian Movement that included John Crowe Ransom Allen Tate Robert Penn Warren and Cleanth Brooks and his own works are often recognized as the best of the movement's "second generation." "In this important new study to Japanese imperialism Michael Montgomery focuses on the psychological factors which lay behind it; the sense of inferiority engendered by the wholesale adoption of Chinese culture the feeling of uniqueness encouraged by the long period of isolation and acceptance of authority conditioned by the rigidly hierarchical nature of Japanese society. These factors still apply today he believes and the recent attempt to sanitise school history textbooks revives uncomfortable echoes of the pre-war Bureau of Thought Control."- dust jacket. Translated from English; edited by Academician N. E. Alekseevskii. Moscow: Mir Publishers 1971. 360 pp. Publisher's cloth with original dust jacket slightly enlarged format. Condition: Very good minor tears to the dust jacket. This 1971 volume remains a fundamental technical reference for the design and construction of high-field magnetic systems. D. Bruce Montgomery a leading figure at the MIT Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory provides an exhaustive analysis of the engineering challenges associated with generating powerful magnetic fields. The book is divided into systematic studies of water-cooled resistive Bitter solenoids pulsed magnetic systems and the then-emerging field of superconducting magnets. Montgomery offers precise mathematical treatments for field homogeneity thermal management and the immense mechanical stresses that can deform or destroy high-field coils. Edited for the Soviet scientific community by Academician Nikolay Alekseevskii a pioneer in low-temperature physics this translation became a vital tool for engineers working on Soviet particle accelerators fusion reactors and solid-state research laboratories. Its combination of practical formulae optimization charts and material science data ensures its continued relevance in the age of modern MRI and high-field experimental physics.</p> Mir Publishers hardcover
