The story of the red-haired orphan Anne Shirley Anne of Green Gables “is the most popular and enduring of a host of girls’ stories published in the United States and Canada in the first years of the 20th century†Carpenter & Pritchard 25-26. “Montgomery began writing about Anne as a serial for a Sunday school periodical in the spring of 1904. The character became so real that she eventually decided to develop the idea into a full novel. Much as she would later with readers Anne took hold of her creator developing into a feisty imaginative little being who demanded to be noticed and loved†Keeline 41. The Page Company hardcover
1936187103Naini Tal: privately printed 1936. A granular record of the First World War in East Africa and Persia First edition one of 30 copies only. These minutely detailed accounts of Colonel Routh's service form part of his War Memoirs of Eastern Campaigns a multi-volume continuously paginated series also covering his service in Mesopotamia and Waziristan. Written to share vital lessons learned in these theatres the memoirs are also invaluable records for military historians. Commissioned into the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1900 Routh 1882-1962 transferred to the Indian Ordnance Department in 1908. He served in East Africa 1914-16 Mesopotamia 1916-18 and in the final months of the war as Deputy Assistant Director of Ordnance Services for "Dunsterforce" and the South Persia Field Force. Fluent in Arabic Persian and Urdu he was an active member of the Royal Central Asian Society. Concerning East Africa Routh reproduces letters to the Director of Ordnance Stores in Simla quotes from his war diary and provides a special section on Smuts's advance in 1916. The Persia section analyses the inception of Dunsterforce comments on Dunsterville and his staff and explains how he drew on his experiences in East Africa to "visualize the cure for many of the anxieties now threatening to overwhelm the hopelessly inadequate staff attempting to administer the Force" p. 294. 184520343Clermont 1845. First Edition. Modern Half Morocco. Cloth over boards. Flaps within to contain plates. Montgomery Livingston. Scarce suite of Hudson River lithographic views with no copies listed on OCLC First Search. With no publisher's or printer's name given on any of the prints it is believed by art historian Kenneth W. Maddox who studied these prints and the career of Livingston that these prints were distributed exclusively among members of the wealthy and influential Livingston family and were not intended for commerce. However lest one think that the artist was a mere dilettante he approached his art career with total dedication and did have some success as a professional artist even if ultimately he was overshadowed by the flashier Hudson River School whose paintings were flashier but also frequently improving upon nature so to speak. N.d. but almost certainly the early1840s. Oblong folio 49.5 by 31.5 cm. Including the title page five lithographs of the Hudson River by Clermont the Livingston family homestead outside of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County New York State. Plus four pages or leaves the same size as the prints with blank versos of Maddox's overview of the prints and his chronology of Livingston's life his exhibition record etc. The artist grew up at Clermont and as an adult lived in another smaller house on the property until he was forced to sell because of financial troubles. Clermont still stands and it is today a house museum and while there has been much change along the river's banks the stretch of river in that area remains often scenic. As to the quaity of the lithographs they come as close as possible to passing as actual pencil drawings. Title page has numerous repaired closed tears and small chips -- the repair effectuated by mounting it onto another sheet. unknown
1842ABC_45539Delhi: Gazette Press by Kunniah Lall 1842. Contemporary half red roan with gold-tooled title on spine marbled sides. 8vo. With a loosely inserted letterpress printed "Note by the publishers" declaring that in hindsight the publisher would have preferred this edition in larger dimensions and in 2 volumes but the printer lacked understanding of "the art of book printing". Also included is a manuscript note with bibliographical information relating to Indian printing. First edition of one of the first titles published by the Gazette Press in Delhi and printed by Kunniah Hall. The content is a collection of articles that were previously published in the Delhi Gazette written by Brigadier-General Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence. He was an advocate for the independence of Punjab and died while defending that in Lucknow earning the nickname "Lawrence of Lucknow". The book offers a wealth of information on the Punjabs in the form of fictionalised memoirs of Colonel Bellasis providing many hardly known details about the region and people to the Western reader. Therefore it is of great importance. The present first edition is very rare WorldCat only offers 3 copies worldwide and we traced 2 more copies in Oxford and the British Library. From the library of Edward Thornton 1799-1875 with his owner's inscription on the front paste-down. 1911138111911. FIRST EDITIONS. Bound together in black buckram. Ex-library Scripps Institution for Biological Research. A compendium of Montgomery’s papers on cytology and zoology. Montgomery 1873-1912 was a distinguished professor and chairman of the Department of Zoology at the University of Pennsylvania. Although he only lived to age thirty-nine he was a prolific researcher and produced more than eighty papers between 1894 and his death in 1912. His work focused on cytology morphology and taxonomy though he also made contributions to the fields of phylogeny animal distribution and ecology.

DSB describes his conclusions from the celebrated work “A study of the chromosomes of the germ cells of metazoa†included in this collection as “containing the essentials of the chromosomal basis of biparental inheritance . . . announced just prior to the rediscovery of Mendel’s laws of segregation and recombination. Despite what seems in retrospect an unimaginative and narrow interpretation it appears undeniable that the speed with which Sutton Wilson and others subsequently established the correlation with the rediscovered laws of inheritance was due in large measure to Montgomery’s masterly analysis – not the least aspect of which was its clarifying terminology.â€

The papers herein contain other considerable contributions. In addition to Montgomery’s work which was basic to the theory of sex determination other papers “brought order to the rather chaotic views of the nucleolus by clearly distinguishing “chromatin nucleoli’ among which were the heterochromosomes from the plasmosomes or true nucleoli. Noteworthy in his 1911 paper was Montgomery’s confirmation of observations on fixed material by examining cells teased out in a physiological fluid. 18115236London: Longman Hurst et al. 1811. First British edition. . Quarto pp. xx 436. Two maps one of which is folding. Pike made the first American exploration of the Southwest under US government auspices: it is consequently the foundation of any collection on that area. Most of this region was Spanish territory at the timewhich led to Pike's arrest with his entire party above Santa Fe; he was sent to Chihuahua for trial. After considerable delay and the confiscation of all his notes maps etc. he was escorted through Texas back to Louisiana. Pike called attention to the weakness of the Spanish defenses and the importance of the Santa Fe trade. The American first edition came out in 1810 in a very confused textual state; the British edition is much clearer due to the editor Rees who "undertook to brink something like cosmos out of this chaos . by weaving as much as he could of the matter of the Appendixes into the main text or into the footnotes thereto thereby greatly reducing the bulk of the appendicial texts." Coues quoted in Wagner-Camp. The folding map shows some minor foxing common with this map; otherwise the text is quite clean and fresh. The binding is 19th century 3/4 calf over marbled boards. There is a bookplate on the inside front board otherwise no markings. Very nice copy.

Longman Hurst [et al.] hardcover books

1936167956Naini Tal: privately printed 1936. I was able to visualize the cure for many of the anxieties now threatening to overwhelm the hopelessly inadequate staff First edition of this scarce minutely detailed account of two important and underreported campaigns to protect British interests from German influence in Persia and Afghanistan written by an intelligent and observant officer. We have traced a single institutional copy only Imperial War Museum. Commissioned into the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1900 Colonel Routh 1882-1962 subsequently served in India transferring to the Indian Ordnance Department in 1908. He served in East Africa 1914-16 Mesopotamia 1916-18 and in the final months of the war as Deputy Assistant Director of Ordnance Services for "Dunsterforce" and the South Persia Field Force. His distinguished military career in India ended on his retirement in 1936. Fluent in Arabic Persian and Urdu he was an active member of the Royal Central Asian Society. These two parts belong to Routh's War Memoirs of Eastern Campaigns a multi-volume continuously paginated series also covering his service in East Africa Mesopotamia and Waziristan. In the first concerning Dunsterforce Routh analyses the inception of the campaign comments on Dunsterville and his staff and explains the changing operational role that required his logistical expertise: "Dunsterville a fine Russian scholar of the Indian Army arrived in Basra en route to North Persia in Jan. 1918. His choice of staff had naturally fallen mainly on Colonials whose ribbons indicated a high degree of gallantry but complete ignorance of the east and its tongues and methods of working. There were so many points of similarity with my past campaign in East Africa that I was able to visualize the cure for many of the anxieties now threatening to overwhelm the hopelessly inadequate staff attempting to administer the Force. Knowing Persia and the Persians it seemed to me that an urgent need was an organized system of equipping the growing military personnel" pp. 292-4. In his narrative of operations an appealing 20-page section "Circumstances leading up to the appointment of D.A.D.O.S." describes his work in Persia with the intelligence officer Gerard Leachman Sir Arnold Wilson and Gertrude Bell. "It was one of Miss Bell's foibles to despise the shallow soldier in his superficial outlook on life" p. 327. Part II on South Persia covers September-October 1918 when the two brigades at Bushire were organized to open a cart road to Shiraz on the Central Persian Plateau. Routh recounts the ordnance situation on his arrival and provides extracts from his diary and other materials. Octavo 239 x 157 mm. With 3 mounted folding mimeographed maps 2 with hand colouring tipped-in letterpress form for local purchase of stores; tables in text. Original brown cloth recently rebacked and re-cornered in dark half calf front board with title in gilt on red label cream endpapers. Binding a little rubbed and marked contents toned one map and first and last leaves with a little browning: very good. hardcover

A fascinating and unique dual signature example of the biography of the man who won the second world war. Signed 'Montgomery of Alamein FM November 1958' and below 'I wrote- enclosing this book. Saying- I had done his bidding during the war. Would he now do mine and sign this book. Within 48 hours it was signed and returned. S Milligan'. In addition to Milligan's inscription he has also annotated the first photo page opposite p.40 which depicts a young Montgomery his father and his mother. He writes beneath the image of Montgomery's father 'A cnt' his mother 'A monster' and next to an image of a child Montgomery 'Ok->'. Cunt has been drawn over in purple pen possibly by the recipient of the book who didn't enjoy Milligan's use of language. Additionally on page 152 where Montgomery has published a letter written to him by a private attached to 8th army in Libya which is gushing over Montgomery's message to the troops a while before. Milligan has written 'Grovel Grovel'. Milligan had seen significant action during the second world war fighting both in the North Africa Campaign as a signaller and was appointed lance bombardier. He was wounded at the battle of Monte Cassino and saw out the war playing jazz guitar and performing comedy for the troops. He wrote several autobiographies of his time during the war including Monty: His Part in My Victory and the humorous annotations and irreverent inscription regarding Montgomery are very much in keeping with Milligans life. An amazing association Collins hardcover

19230007012ASEA ABOARD THE S.S. MONGOLIA EUROPE. Good. 1923. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript travel journal of a young woman's ocean cruise from New York to Europe and a month-long tour of the continent. What makes this journal particularly interesting for the reader should they be researchers or historians of America's post World War I ascendancy is the specific regard the author has for America's social construct in the era of the Roaring 20s. The author is Virginia L. Montgomery writes very well though with a certain air of haughtiness or arrogance to her writing as examples below will illustrate. In some respects it is an unabashed cry of American exceptionalism exemplifying the term 'Ugly American'. In the 19th century Mark Twain wrote about The Innocents Abroad and perhaps it is no coincidence that Montgomery refers to herself and her 2 travelling companions as "the Innocents' " p. 8 Montgomery travels with her sister Maude and a girlfriend Vergue Criswell. They are referred to in the journal as M and V but are identified from the passenger manifest included within. From the very limited information available about Criswell we may suppose that they are in their mid-to-late 20's and living in the Providence RI area. In her opening 'Introduction' she maintains that they will have a right to "crow over our less fortunate neighbours". In the 2nd paragraph she states "There is more Tradition behind the rising curtain of civilization in America than in any other country in the world. . Was there not more Tradition in the valiant little band of Pilgrims . than in the mighty efforts of Alexander.' She ends the Introduction with this exclamation: Tradition backed by the principles of right and justice has made America the greatest country in the world. No wonder it will be hard to judge Europe by American eyes and morals. And so the perspective of this journal is cast. She describes in detail their journey across the Atlantic on board S.S. Mongolia. Their descriptions are colourful and include a significant amount of commentary not flattering about crew and other passengers. Our especial cabin steward a little sawed off wizened she-man named Pierre or Harry was most solicitous. p. 6 The Captain appeared today and I wasn't particularly impressed. So did the ship's doctor a broken down rummy effect and the purser a sissy looking fellow as full of conceit as the ocean is swells. Germans and English! Ye Gods What a mixture! Thank God I was born in America! With the American complex p. 13 Although her language gets rather florid in many places her descriptions of countryside in Europe are quite colourful: The fields were a riot of color. Poppies added their crimson splashes to the gold of ripened wheat . p.26 Descriptions of museums palaces cathedrals and other points of interest are well described and can leave the reader with a sense of what conditions were like there 5 years after the WWI. This is especially so when she describes the lingering destruction from that conflict. From mid-July through mid-Aug their travels took them through France Switzerland Germany Belgium The Netherlands and finally England. The exact itinerary is included in the handwritten notes. A historian would find this an excellent first-hand account of sights and scenes in the immediate postwar years. It also gives an insight into one particular aspect of the American character especially vis-avis new or unusual people incidents or experiences. There is a typed transcription secured in a 2-ring binder. The handwritten notes are 8" by 5 inches and secured by a lace. They number 142 handwritten pages. The typed notes are secured in a hard cover 2-ring binder and amount to 85 pages. The journal is in good condition although the spine is cracked. Most pages are completely attached. The pages are 100% complete.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF VIRGINIA MONTGOMERY; MAUDE MONTGOMERY; VERGUE CRISSWELL; S.S. 1960346279No place: no publisher 1960. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 25 decorative title cards for a range of motion pictures released between 1952 -1960. Each measures approximately 14" x 11". There is some wear to the extremities a few scattered creases and a bit of rubbing but overall near fine with surprisingly bright colors. Each card has been screenprinted on the verso of a large movie poster that was cut into sections to match the dimensions of a typical lobby card. Movie theaters would occasionally commission local sign makers to produce lobby cards for display. The production symbols on many of the cards indicate they were created in the same years as the films they represent. Among the most notable titles in the collection are: From Here to Eternity Shane Duel in the Sun Stalag 17 and Gidget. An attractive set of mid-century film memorabilia.
