1924501669The American Baptist Publication Society 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. VERY GOOD. 724 pp. 16.5 x 10.5 cm. Navy cloth gilt stamped spine and front cover titles edges red. Tips a bit rubbed some tiny splashes to tail edges owner's name M. Kathryn Miller to FFEP one toned spot to very top margin of Mark 5-12 otherwise very sound and square fresh and unmarked pages. First printing of Helen Barrett Montgomery's New Testament 'Published to signalize the completion of the first hundred years of work of the American Baptist Publication Society.' Oddly and unaccountably unlisted in Darlow & Moule. Chamberlain p. 572 notes it as the first Modern English translation of the Bible by a woman which is technically true if you don't count Mary Kingsland Higgs's role as committee chair for The Twentieth Century New Testament. One can argue that it is in fact the first English translation by a woman as Julia Smith's edition was a word-for-word equivalent. Montgomery became the first woman to head a major religious denomination in the United States when she was name president of the American Northern Baptist Convention in 1921. She assumed that role after serving the previous 10 years as president of the Woman's American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. The American Baptist Publication Society hardcover
