With the stamp of Les Artistes Associes on the verso along with a stamp of a large capital "S." <br/><br/>The final completed film for Gable and Monroe before their deaths. Notoriously a trying endeavor for the actress who was struggling with her drug problem and pending divorce from Arthur Miller and would often fail to show up to the set and for director John Huston who would drink and occasionally fall asleep while filming. Gable performed all of his own stunts then suffered a heart attack only two days after filming ended and died ten days later. <br/><br/>Set and shot on location in Dayton Nevada.<br/><br/>10 x 8 inches. To "Dear Bill" i.e. Willis Birchman and appropriately captioned next to his name in the letterhead: "Goes Nuts in 3/4 War Time." Birchman was one of Flagg's frequent correspondents as a consequence of Birchman having featured Flagg in his 1937 book FACES & FACTS BY AND ABOUT 26 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. A rather blunt letter much of it written in jingoistic jest and all in caps: "Have you ever thought of Chi-Chi-Renoir's enthralling stench for gay frolicking moments You have no idea of what it will do for you! But buy a war bond foist! Mail a bottle of Chi-Chi to your Nip Girl Friend - It will kill her! Suffer little Krauts to come unto me - Gen. McArthur's Batman ought to take those Greta Garbo specs off'n Doug when he's having his pitcha snapped. Howard Chandelier Twisty told some body to call me to do heads at Halloran - cant that old poopski mind his own wars! . Daily Telegraph of London wants me 1917 Brishday poster to hang in their N.Y. office - I gave the original to Lloyd George - so he died. .What do you think of my idea of killing myself and killing the screeching refugee next door first & A couple of cats! Broadside. 12" x 11 1/2" An early industrial broadside from the town of Silver Creek on the shore of Lake Erie in Western New York State founded in the early 19th century by Massachusetts residents incorporated in 1848 and an important port on the Lake until the coming of the railroad. The area had a number of businesses active in producing machinery including Howes Babcock given its strategic location in the country's westward expansion. Greenleaf & Montgomery the names at the bottom of the broadside were William R. Greenleaf and Ezekiel Montgomery who formed this company to produce steam engines and mill machinery. Not only do they argue for the superiority of their steam operated saw mills but claim invention of mully-heads for saw mills whether steam or water powered and guaranteed to produce the best results. Lacks front flyleaf and have title is clipped but with no loss. Normal aging and embossed library stamp on title and folding plates. Overall in pretty good condition. Montgomery 1792-1880 presents considerable data a good portion in numerous tables on the different aspects of the cost of manufacturing cotton. He looks at manufacturing costs in several locations in America including Massachusetts New Jersey and Rhode Island. He argues that because factories in Great Britain are already as cost efficient as they can be; only additional technical advancement could improve their economies. 1915280588New York 1915. unbound. very good-. 1 page 11 x 8.5 inches New York March 23 1915 to fellow illustrator Charles Olson asking for a contribution of a drawing in full: "Will you contribute to the souvenir menu for the Cobb dinner on April 25th -- Some little drawing of Cobb could I have it before next Tuesday Gibson has promised something so you'll be in good company -- I happen to be charwoman of the bloody menu 'community.'" Note: The above event took place in honor of Irvin S. Cobb for inclusion in a privately printed book consisting of "Friendly Tributes upon the Occasion of a Dinner Tendered in his honor at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel." Humphreys letter on two panels of a folded small quarto sheet of Hotel Salisbury letterhead; Flagg's on recto only of one sheet of quarto plain typing paper. Both show folds from having been mailed but very good. An exchange evidencing the probable end of a long friendship between film star Cecil Humphreys 1883 - 1947 THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL WUTHERING HEIGHTS THE RAZOR'S EDGE and the prominent American illustrator 1877 - 1960 a friendship which may have dated back to Flagg's association with Hollywood film projects in the years immediately following the Great War. Humphreys takes Flagg to task in response to an earlier letter that is not present writing in part: "On meeting a young friend of mine at the hospital you chose to stigmatize him as a 'pansy'! I assured you he was nothing of the sort. I have known the boy for some time - he was a great friend of my lad's in England - and anybody who knows my boy knows that he is not in the habit of associating with 'pansies' or their ilk! You hardly contribute to the saving of our unique friendship . When I make a friend I happen to be loyal to him - and I certainly will not allow you or anybody else to refer to . as 'a young squirt or a pansy'!!! I value your friendship as you know more than anything but it doesn't make me blind to several attributes that I deplore in you! . One - let me assure you I will not stand for - and that is the use of the word 'fk' - before ladies in my room and in my presence! You may describe this as 'British' - 'old-fashioned' - what you will - the fact remains. The first part of your letter is so blatently sic stupid that it calls for no comment! Yours Cecil." Flagg responds with vigor writing in part: "It's rather a pity you needed to drag in an irrelevancy - like my unfortunate lingual lapse - that vulgar four letter word so popular with your titled women! .Which leaves you with the calm satisfaction of an English gentleman who confines his bawdy brilliancies in the presence of women to 'pissed' and 'pooped' and 'bitch'!" Flagg continues aggressively for another 125 or so words taking both the recipient and to a certain extent British custom to task. He concludes: "So hail and farewell to a friendship that was charming while it lasted! I relinquish you to your REALLY 'blatantly stupid' friends! Monty." Flagg never known to practice restraint in his letters to friends and antagonists is in particularly rare form in this heated exchange. unknown books
