"In 1805 Pike was given the difficult assignment of conducting a reconnaissance of the upper Mississippi region. He was ordered to explore the headwaters of that river to purchase sites from the Indians for further military posts and to bring a few influential chiefs back to St. Louis for talks. The trip was only moderately successful as a mission to the tribes but Pike was able to convey important geographical information to President Jefferson and other Washington officials. On Pike's second expedition 1806-1807 he was assigned to explore the head-waters of the Arkansas River then proceed south and descend the Red River from its source . Pike and his men were taken into custody by a Spanish patrol and Pike was able to observe many areas in New Mexico Chihuahua and Texas . His book created interest in the Southwest and stimulated the expansionist movement in Texas" Hill. The maps were the first to exhibit a geographic knowledge of the Southwest based on first-hand exploration and are considered "milestones in the mapping of the American West" Wheat. 18115236London: Longman Hurst et al. 1811. First British edition. . Quarto pp. xx 436. Two maps one of which is folding. Pike made the first American exploration of the Southwest under US government auspices: it is consequently the foundation of any collection on that area. Most of this region was Spanish territory at the timewhich led to Pike's arrest with his entire party above Santa Fe; he was sent to Chihuahua for trial. After considerable delay and the confiscation of all his notes maps etc. he was escorted through Texas back to Louisiana. Pike called attention to the weakness of the Spanish defenses and the importance of the Santa Fe trade. The American first edition came out in 1810 in a very confused textual state; the British edition is much clearer due to the editor Rees who "undertook to brink something like cosmos out of this chaos . by weaving as much as he could of the matter of the Appendixes into the main text or into the footnotes thereto thereby greatly reducing the bulk of the appendicial texts." Coues quoted in Wagner-Camp. The folding map shows some minor foxing common with this map; otherwise the text is quite clean and fresh. The binding is 19th century 3/4 calf over marbled boards. There is a bookplate on the inside front board otherwise no markings. Very nice copy.

Longman Hurst [et al.] hardcover books

The feature item of the archive is a binder of over 50 typescript poems with occasional pencil notations and corrections in what we presume to be Gilliland's hand accompanied by a typed and incomplete List of Publications. Given that several of the poems were typed on the blank verso of her husband's life insurance office stationery it seems likely that these were Mrs. Gilland's personal collection comprised of both published and apparently unpublished poems. Also included is a copy of Indiana Poets: An Anthology of 48 Living Writers New York: Henry Harrison 1935 in which Gilliland is one of the featured 48 writers; 20 issues of various poetry magazines one duplicate containing publications of her poetry; and two b/w photographs one of which is identified as a portrait of the author. Mary Winona Gilliland lived in Indianapolis most of her life graduating from Tudor Hall and then DePauw University before marrying Robert V. Gilliland in 1915. She was published in The American Mercury Poetry Kaleidograph Indiana Poetry Magazine Weird Tales Bozart Westward Better Homes and Gardens Wings and the 1937 issue of American Women Poets among other magazines and was invited to join the Poetry Society of America in 1937. A unique collection of material documenting the literary achievements of a largely forgotten mid-20th century poet. (various) hardcover books

1971125382London: Rolling Stones Records 1971. Vintage lithograph promotional poster for the classic 1971 album playfully and conceptually utilizing the original album design by Andy Warhol.

A scarce item made on the London side of the Atlantic to promote the British release though presumably never released. Printed on an unusually thick textured stock and machine-folded as issued.

Rather than licking their wounds after Altamont the Rolling Stones recorded a follow-up that was the equal of "Let It Bleed" taking "Brown Sugar" from a drug-induced all-night session in Muscle Shoals "Sister Morphine" from the "Let It Bleed" sessions and 8 more blistering tracks recorded in their mobile unit during the summer of 1970. Andy Warhol famously designed the jeans-and-zipper cover which the boys make humorous use of here. Virtually every track today is a staple of rock radio including "Bitch" "Sway" "Wild Horses" "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" Dead Flowers" and "Moonlight Mile."

23 x 35 inches on heavy textured stock and machine folded as issued.
