H8611Good. 8vo marbled boards book itself rubbed and used with 38 pages filled in from 1821-29 detailing Hugh Montgomery's efforts to support the education of Horatio Trafalgar Beck 1807-1880s. Montgomery lived at Levington Cottage near Ipswich. He refers to the boy's father as his deceased "messmate" and given the boy's name named after Horatio Nelson's famous 1805 triumph we can well imagine that the elder Beck and Montgomery must have been in the Navy together under Nelson. After Beck died Montgomery took it on himself to provide financial assistance for young Horatio's education and contacted the boy's uncle John Beck -- much of the copy book is taken up with establishing Horatio in school and providing John Beck an annual 5-10 Pounds to support Horatio's prospects and the furtherance of his studies. In short time financial hardship and ill health beset Hugh Montgomery and it was a struggle for him to meet the obligations he's set for himself and querulously he expresses the hope rather often that Horatio is worth all this effort. He is also "vexed" that Horatio's mother has not done anything to support her own child. Toward the end of this copy book the letters turn toward Horatio's future and there is an account of a visit from the mother who thinks that Horatio should engage in a career at sea which is what his father wanted for him. Montgomery makes inquires about placing Horatio on a ship engaged in trade with the Indies thinking a long voyage would be a good way to commence his learning. The letters end abruptly in 1829 with Horatio's prospects still unclear. From research on genealogical sites we have found that Horatio lived a long life married had at least three children and that his occupation at least in later years was listed as "joiner. unknown

19230007012ASEA ABOARD THE S.S. MONGOLIA EUROPE. Good. 1923. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript travel journal of a young woman's ocean cruise from New York to Europe and a month-long tour of the continent. What makes this journal particularly interesting for the reader should they be researchers or historians of America's post World War I ascendancy is the specific regard the author has for America's social construct in the era of the Roaring 20s. The author is Virginia L. Montgomery writes very well though with a certain air of haughtiness or arrogance to her writing as examples below will illustrate. In some respects it is an unabashed cry of American exceptionalism exemplifying the term 'Ugly American'. In the 19th century Mark Twain wrote about The Innocents Abroad and perhaps it is no coincidence that Montgomery refers to herself and her 2 travelling companions as "the Innocents' " p. 8 Montgomery travels with her sister Maude and a girlfriend Vergue Criswell. They are referred to in the journal as M and V but are identified from the passenger manifest included within. From the very limited information available about Criswell we may suppose that they are in their mid-to-late 20's and living in the Providence RI area. In her opening 'Introduction' she maintains that they will have a right to "crow over our less fortunate neighbours". In the 2nd paragraph she states "There is more Tradition behind the rising curtain of civilization in America than in any other country in the world. . Was there not more Tradition in the valiant little band of Pilgrims . than in the mighty efforts of Alexander.' She ends the Introduction with this exclamation: Tradition backed by the principles of right and justice has made America the greatest country in the world. No wonder it will be hard to judge Europe by American eyes and morals. And so the perspective of this journal is cast. She describes in detail their journey across the Atlantic on board S.S. Mongolia. Their descriptions are colourful and include a significant amount of commentary not flattering about crew and other passengers. Our especial cabin steward a little sawed off wizened she-man named Pierre or Harry was most solicitous. p. 6 The Captain appeared today and I wasn't particularly impressed. So did the ship's doctor a broken down rummy effect and the purser a sissy looking fellow as full of conceit as the ocean is swells. Germans and English! Ye Gods What a mixture! Thank God I was born in America! With the American complex p. 13 Although her language gets rather florid in many places her descriptions of countryside in Europe are quite colourful: The fields were a riot of color. Poppies added their crimson splashes to the gold of ripened wheat . p.26 Descriptions of museums palaces cathedrals and other points of interest are well described and can leave the reader with a sense of what conditions were like there 5 years after the WWI. This is especially so when she describes the lingering destruction from that conflict. From mid-July through mid-Aug their travels took them through France Switzerland Germany Belgium The Netherlands and finally England. The exact itinerary is included in the handwritten notes. A historian would find this an excellent first-hand account of sights and scenes in the immediate postwar years. It also gives an insight into one particular aspect of the American character especially vis-avis new or unusual people incidents or experiences. There is a typed transcription secured in a 2-ring binder. The handwritten notes are 8" by 5 inches and secured by a lace. They number 142 handwritten pages. The typed notes are secured in a hard cover 2-ring binder and amount to 85 pages. The journal is in good condition although the spine is cracked. Most pages are completely attached. The pages are 100% complete.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF VIRGINIA MONTGOMERY; MAUDE MONTGOMERY; VERGUE CRISSWELL; S.S. 18460Two letters; one typed and signed and the other entirely hand-written; the first on James Montgomery Flagg 340 West 57th Street New York City letterhead and typed signed in red crayon "Monty" a very amusing and irreverent letter obviously to a close friend dated "Indegardampendence Day 1944" 1944 artistically spaced beneath; the addressee 'Paul' from internal evidence was apparently an executive at CBS radio and for whom Flagg worked on occasion stating in part: "Dear Paul - One of my most favorite characters of fiction and Lousey but Beloved Bastard of Modern Times; Snir; There is a despicable weakness in my otherwise robust ego that lets me write to you on my Model T Corona. I would think my Pride would stop me knowing as I do that you not only will ignore it but in all likelihood wont even read my letter: Maybe you cant read! So you went into advertising. What is this magnetism you use on me It cant be entirely the hope that I can wangle jobs out of you; And yet what HAVE you got but money You certainly are not pretty!.a friend gave Flagg a book on Velasquez.I pored over it and decided there wasn't such a chasm between Velasquez and me as you would hastily imagine. Except he couldn't illustrated Galsworthy-nor think up Nervy Nat while putting out a pair of clean shorts for Philip IV. You have noticed that Velasquez is NOT listed in Who's Who!." and more comparing his talent and lambasting that of Franz Hals Howard Chandler Christy and Hamilton Fisher; evidently Flagg was asking about painting a portrait and ends with ".For the love of Mary and Michael Joseph answer this for-free proposal! Don't be a mucous-minded small-town Equine-Brioche!"; the second letter undated and seemingly from the same period of time and also addressed to "Paul" written in black ink on two sides of plain paper and referring to additional portrait work Flagg is complaining about bothersome staff and getting paid for his efforts; He jibes Paul with ".Did you get a copy of Owen Wister's "Ancient Grudge" I told you I'd like to read it on the air- I doubt if you heard me as you were sitting in a dark corner making fond caricatures of me at the time!." Flagg goes on to speak of other sitters he has had or not been able convince for a portrait painting sitting mentioning a Mrs. Berwith Sgnr. Martinelli most probably Giovanni Martinelli Italian opera singer at the Lotos Club and comparing refusals because of 'busyness" to the fact that FDR found the time to have his portrait done; with suitable funny ranting about calling Martinelli a ".shirt with a voice in it!."; Flagg calls Mrs. Berwith ".she is nothing but a girdle with an angel in it."; Flagg signs in ink "Monty" with the admonishment below "Now pay attention to this letter!" and with a wonderful self-portrait caricature in pencil colored in red crayon and with finger pointing at the sentiment above; letters are perhaps addressed to Paul Kesten who was Vice President of the fledgling CBS Radio network at this time during the WWII years; James Montgomery Flagg 1877-1960 American illustrator cartoonist perhaps most famously remembered for his fabulous poster art especially of the patriotic variety during the U.S. involvement in wars; typed letter one-sided; script letter is two sided; some edge tips wear and old lines; some age-darkening; very good condition and wonderful content revealing the humor and personality of this famous American illustrative artist. .
