An uncut sheet of spare labels is enclosed at the end. Internally this copy is fresh and bright. The spine is sunned with slight loss at crown and the boards show moderate soiling. An uncommon signature from a Czech author and dissident who emigrated to America in 1969 staying until the USSR fell then moved back to the Czech Republic. A presentable copy of Lucy Maud Montgomery's eighth book signed by Montgomery on the front endpaper. Her Boston publisher L. C. Page had refused to consider publishing her poems. This is the first of this Canadian author's writings to appear from a Canadian publisher and is dedicated "to the memory of the gallant Canadian soldiers". The title poem "The Watchman" was read at Montgomery's funeral. One of the more difficult of her books to obtain in decent condition. There is just a trace of rubbing to the spine and very scattered foxing. Blue cloth binding stamped in gilt which has darkened. Very Good binding / no dust jacket. Broadside. 12" x 11 1/2" An early industrial broadside from the town of Silver Creek on the shore of Lake Erie in Western New York State founded in the early 19th century by Massachusetts residents incorporated in 1848 and an important port on the Lake until the coming of the railroad. The area had a number of businesses active in producing machinery including Howes Babcock given its strategic location in the country's westward expansion. Greenleaf & Montgomery the names at the bottom of the broadside were William R. Greenleaf and Ezekiel Montgomery who formed this company to produce steam engines and mill machinery. Not only do they argue for the superiority of their steam operated saw mills but claim invention of mully-heads for saw mills whether steam or water powered and guaranteed to produce the best results.
