Sadoveanu was a novelist short story writer journalist and political figure who twice served as acting head of state for the communist republic. "The Hatchet" is considered his greatest work. The book is loosely based on themes from the Romanian ballad Miorița. It is illustrated by the Romanian painter illustrator and university professor Anastase Demian.
