In a full binding of paper covered boards printed in colors and the front cover and spine with some additional hand-finishing with marbled paper endsheets. Top edge gilt. Boards have some evidence of small abrasions and minor markings top outside corner bumped apparent in the text block as well spine and corners with some small nicks and wear. Altogether a nice copy of this fragile book in the original publisher's binding. Discreet private library bookplate of Auguste Lambiotte on the front pastedown and a warm presentation inscription from him to Louis Marx American toy maker and businessman on the first blank. The final two volumes document their return to Persia in 1907 via Ishqabad Mashhad Nichapoor Sebzevar Sharoudi Tehran Qom Isfahan Djoumougoum the Bakhtiari and back via Isfahan Tehran and the Caspian Sea.<br><br>There were only 500 copies of the first edition published. D'Allemagne was an archivist of the library of Arsenal. He travelled to Persia and Russian Turkistan in 1899 and again in 1907 accompanied by Jean Vinchon who took a number of interesting photographs and field notes that served as the basis of D'Allemagne's book. The route of this scientific mission passes through Kiev Odessa Vladikavkaz Tiflis Baku Krasnovodsk. The objective is the archaeological study of Transcaspian monuments and of Turkestan. It will bring together an important ethnographic collection in particular Persian rugs and ceramics. Returning in 1907 in the company of Jean Vinchon he visited the towns of Khiva and the surroundings of his oasis. He donated to the Louvre a fragment of a funerary stele brought back from Samarkand. Very nice copies with oriental bindings designed by Jean Tabourier and produced by Canape.<br><br> Size: Folio 330 x 255 mm.
