1939145028London: Metheun & Co. Ltd. 1939. xviii222 pp. Octavo in original blue cloth with one illustration map and three folding maps at end. Original dustwrapper. Minor wear to the wrapper otherwise an exceptional copy. Not in AB. This account of the Franklin expedition deals primarily with addressing the fortunes of the expedition. The author has included a brief account of the search for the lost expedition and has attempted to present an outline of the principal events which while not associated with the search itself have occurred in connection with the ill-fated enterprise. The narrative has been compiled from both published and non-published sources. Very scarce as many copies were destroyed during the second world war when Metheun's warehouse was bombed. Still in my opinion the best single volume summary of Franklin and the Search for period. 1939 Metheun & Co. Ltd. hardcover

But over the past ten years neoconservatism has become a force in criminology. Wilson the leading advocate of this right-ward move and Herrnstein who is noted for his work on I. Q. race and meritocracy have written what should become the major source on this important development in criminology. Its moderate Aristotelian behavioral theory is reminiscent of Edward Banfield's Unheavenly City Revisited and Ernest Van Den Haag's Punishing Criminals but this book probably will have greater impact than either of these or any of Wilson's and Herrnstein's earlier writings. It will be praised by many and criticized by others who will complain that it does not expose the proper ``myths about crime' ' does not explain why ``the rich get richer and the poor get prison' ' and turns attention away from the corrupting influence of modern institutions. Essential reading for anyone seriously interested in crime or human nature." John Broderick Sociology Department Stone hill College N. Easton Mass. -- FS REVIEW: Under the dominant influence of JQW this work shies away from the truth about the causes of crime. Due to JQW's unfiltered shallowness inclined as it is toward Broken Windows-quality explanation the junk thinking seeps-in and defiles the effort. Some valuable points nonetheless. -- with a bonus offer-- . Simon & Schuster hardcover
