New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 236 p., ills. Turks in London: The unheard voices. The history of Turkish people in Britain is not as short as many would presume but is quite under researched. There is some research on the history of Turks in Britain but still many people do not know that 'Güvercinlik' (pigeon-loft) is the term given by the first Turkish arrivals to Trafalgar Square, London. It is where the first Turks (mainly Turkish Cypriots) used to meet. This was their one and only meeting point out of necessity as they did not have any associations, cafes or restaurants of their own to gather and socialise. Although it is known that some Turkish Cypriots arrived in London in the 1920's and 1930's Turkish Cypriots started coming in bigger numbers to London in the 1940's and 'Güvercinlik' is the place where their journey started.
'...an account of a year spent on the Greek island of Paxos." "His wry and beautifully written excursion into a dystopian Arcadia is rooted in his sardonic wit and the pitiless eye that he turns on modern Greece, on modern Greeks, and, not the least, on himself." (this copy marred by underlinings and comments from a previous reader- some of which, however, are quite interesting-) Book

Illustrated guide to the folk arts and crafts on display at the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation / Peloponnesiakon Laographikon Hidryma. 86p. illus. Book
"Four well-known classicists have taken the traditional chronology of Greek history texts and written a much-needed overview for modern students. By means of a chapter structure that is well designed and logical, they take us through each period of Greek history . Each chapter begins with a discussion of the sources for that period and includes annotated endnotes that deal extensively with recent scholarship. Unlike many other histories, the book goes into depth on the Hellenistic period, as well as the Bronze and Dark Ages. Although the Spartans and Athenians naturally dominate, the authors consider Sparta before Athens, reflecting the order in which the moderns have admired them. An appropriate balance is found between political, social, and cultural history, and the authors display no outlandish prejudices to derail this noble effort" 512p. illus. bibliography.index Text clean and neat, but some minor scuffing to paper wraps Book
