84153802China c.1900 n.p. Accordion-folding album very good 10 hand-painted scenes on silk in delicate watercolors full text in Chinese & English 14.5 x 20.5 cm.brown silk covers with Chinese title slip on the front. R A R E A charming work made for distribution to foreign visitors to China. Done in the Chinese fashion beginning right to left. Covers the Confucian devotions and festivals to give honor to ancestors offering sacrifices to the Gods and establishing general holidays for public entertainment. This work covers the ten main festivals: New Year Greetings on Yuan Tan. The Lantern Show on Shang Yuan. Cleansing Tombs on Ching Min or Tombs Festival Day. Dragon-boat Racing on Tuan Yang. Meditation of Kinsmen on Chung Yuan. Enjoying the Moon light at mid-Autumn festival. Ascending a height on Double-Nine. Thanksgiving for Good Harvests. Offering to God of the Kitchen Range for Blessing. Thanks to Heaven on New Year's Eve. Each of the ten festivals are portrayed in a delicate hand-painted illustration of festivals. Delicately painted in full color on rough silk with traditional Chinese silk mounting style with Chinese & English text on the opposite side. A fine example of the Chinese illustrated book with silk mountings on the borders of the paintings. Nicely done with two edge gilt as usual a bit of warping to covers. THE BINDING: This title comes in two variant bindings: one is wood covers with the Chinese character "FU" carved and stained green. Another variant is brown silk covered boards. The contents remains the same as does the price. . unknown

1854List2974New York City 1854. Single one-page letter measuring 8 x 12 ½ inches. Folded with one small tear; near fine. A letter from “C. Riddle†with the New York City Inspector’s Department to “Sant. Mairs Esq†concerning the best way to push through their choice of appointee for the Collector of the Port of New York. Riddle writes:

“I write this to inform you that there has been six or seven appointments made in the Custom House within the last few days. You know what the old man told us the other day when you were here. This looks to me as if there was some humbug going on. Now my dear sir in my opinion the certain way to secure Mr. Van Derlip’s appointment is for you to write to Washington and secure the influence of Dayton or Miller or someone of your Congressmen to see the Secretary of the Treasury and let them use their influence with him. It is said here by the knowing ones that all the appointments are made at Washington now if this be so this is the only way to fix the Collector. . A little effort on your part in this way will I think fix the matter.â€

Given that Riddle mentions the Custom House the “Collector†position the two are trying to fix is likely Collector of the Port of New York. This position which oversaw the collection of import duties and fines was extremely lucrative: it paid a percentage of money collected at what was then the busiest port in the US and the Collector’s office was also able to hand out federal jobs. The Collector was appointed by the President who at the time was Franklin Pierce; the Secretary of the Treasury whom Riddle is suggesting Mairs influence was James Guthrie. Guthrie pushed reforms on customs collectors including requiring much more frequent reports from them.

If Collector of the Port was the position in question the pair were unsuccessful; State Senator Heman J. Redfield was the Pierce-appointed Collector from 1853 to 1857 and no one named Van Derlip ever held the position.

An intriguing example of an attempt at political maneuvering. Of interest to scholars of New York City politics. unknown

17915513Paris: imprimerie Royale 1791. First edition. A nice copy of this list of tariffs and duties payable on the eve of the Revolution. An impressive alphabetical list of products or goods with opposite the amount of the tax applied upon entry and exit according to the quantity or weight. No printed or publisher details. There appear to have been many versions of this printed particularly by regional printers. Presumably for distribution throughout the kingdom. We have been unable to find another copy with the same vignette to the first page. Loose sheets unsewn. In good clean condition with a touch of edgewear and darkening only. There seem to be several different paginations to copies of this tarif. Our copy has 35 pages and is a complete A-Z list. It seems there is also a 44 page copy we believe that this has tariffs applicable in the colonies and lists of goods prohibited to export. 28cm x 21.5cm.
