This is a page-for-page reprint of the 1650 Elzevier editions; and the second of two impressions of 1671 (without the preliminary headpiece). Willems 1462n. Valerius Maximus was a widely read Roman author, but little is known of his life. This work, [Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings] was written around A.D. 30 and is a miscellany of anecdotes about a variety of subjects. It was especially important as a source for writers and orators. The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583. There is some research on the history of Turks in Britain but still many people do not know that 'Güvercinlik' (pigeon-loft) is the term given by the first Turkish arrivals to Trafalgar Square, London. It is where the first Turks (mainly Turkish Cypriots) used to meet. This was their one and only meeting point out of necessity as they did not have any associations, cafes or restaurants of their own to gather and socialise. Although it is known that some Turkish Cypriots arrived in London in the 1920's and 1930's Turkish Cypriots started coming in bigger numbers to London in the 1940's and 'Güvercinlik' is the place where their journey started.
